Sick Days
“Sick days” encompass two kinds of sanctioned absences:
1) Sick days include any employee’s need to be absent due to an unexpected health condition, such as a cold, running a temperature, or any illness or ailment or injury necessitating an absence in order to recover and/or to seek a health care provider’s counsel and/or intervention. 2) Sick days may also include personal days taken only upon pre- approval by one’s supervisor. In most cases, approved personal days will include days the employee must take because they are unavoidable, such as crucial home care emergencies, family care emergencies, surgeries scheduled-in-advance, and other such extraordinary circumstances. In short, personal days as a facet of the “Sick Day Policy” are made available for your use in order to address personal business that is pressing and important to your well-being, so that you can return to school and resume teaching and working promptly with minimal stress. There are additional restrictions on the use of sick days, including the taking of personal days immediately prior to or immediately following holidays, or taking personal days during Orientation Week or the first two weeks of school and the final two weeks of school. There are additional “black out dates”; please consult with the HR Director regarding these restrictions.
The school has the right to require doc umentation from the employee’s physician in order to confirm the proper following of the Sick Day Policy.
“Sick days” are not transferrable; they cannot be added onto vacation days; they are not cumulative one year to the next; they cannot be converted into compensation if unused.
For more information about what may constitute an approved sick day, please speak with the HR Director.
There are legitimate reasons to take time off without being docked for sick days, and these are outlined below under the “Paid Leaves of Absence” section.
