BATTALION CHIEF
The Battalion Chief is an integral position of the Frederick-Firestone Fire District Command Staff. This position is responsible for the leadership, management, and development of assigned shift personnel through the delegation and coordination of all daily activities of an all-hazards response organization. These activities encompass structural and wildfire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical services and transport, technical rescue, special operations, water, and hazardous materials response.

Located in Weld County, the Carbon Valley region includes the Towns of Frederick and Firestone and the City of Dacono. Our Fire District proudly serves Frederick, Firestone, and several unincorporated areas of Weld County — covering roughly 38 square miles and protecting more than 42,000 residents. Frederick and Firestone are among the fastest-growing communities in Colorado, with annual growth rates of 7% respectively. As the area expands, the District is actively planning for increased service demands, larger response areas, and rising call volumes. Currently, the District is building a Training & Maintenance Facility, scheduled for completion in the summer of 2026, and is actively planning to break ground on Fire Station No. 6 in the fall of 2026, along with additional staffing. As an ISO-2, the District is working to keep up with community growth and is planning for an ISO-1 in 2029. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Operational Leadership: Direct all fire suppression, emergency medical, and specialized rescue preparation as the commander of an assigned shift to assure operational readiness Division Management: Supervise, lead, and develop assigned Shift Lieutenants and their crews Strategic Planning: Participate in fiscal management, accreditation processes, and organizational improvement initiatives Emergency Response: Serve as the Incident Commander during applicable emergency incidents Quality Assurance: Daily participation in the District’s fire and EMS quality improvement programs Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to all emergency medical service regulations and District policies Resource Management: Manage assigned budgets as well as provide oversight of assigned personnel and their budgetary projects REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Emergency Service Management, or related field Actively pursuing a Master's degree Experience Minimum 10 years in fire and emergency medical services with progressively increasing responsibility Certifications & Licenses IFSAC or Pro Board Fire Officer II IFSAC or Pro Board Hazmat Operations National Registry or Colorado EMT-Basic or Paramedic Professional Rescuer CPR Valid State driver's license with an insurable record Blue Card Hazard Zone Command Required NIMS certifications, including ICS 300 & 400 Preferred Qualifications NFA Managing Officer program preferred or future enrollment CPSE accreditation (Chief Fire Officer, Fire Officer, or Chief Training Officer) IFSAC or Pro Board Incident Safety Officer ACLS certification (if applicable)

The Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District (District) has established the following job description to outline the basic requirements, duties, and responsibilities of the full-time position of Battalion Chief. This position is “at-will”, which means the District may terminate the employment relationship at any time and for no reason, subject only to Federal and State law requirements. Similarly, the employee may terminate the employment relationship at any time without notice and for no reason.

Position Summary:
The Battalion Chief is responsible for managing and overseeing assigned personnel through the delegation and coordination of all daily shift activities, non-emergency functions, and emergency incident operations, including all daily fire, emergency medical, and special rescue operations, in accordance with the policies, guidelines, protocols, and directives set forth by the District. The Battalion Chief position involves, but is not limited to, initiating and operating as part of the District’s incident command staff at emergency incidents to effectively and safely command, control, and mitigate emergencies, responding to emergencies, implementing, participating in, and contributing to strategic and financial planning processes. The Battalion Chief must also supervise, mentor, and coach lieutenants and firefighters, including those involved in search and rescue, fire suppression, salvage and overhaul operations, fire and life safety inspections, community risk reduction, emergency medical treatment, and transport, and participate in the District’s training and all-hazard response programs.

Essential Duties:
1. Maintains knowledge and supervises compliance with all rules, policies, guidelines, and directives of the District.
2. Under the direction of the Assistant Chief of Operations and in coordination with the Deputy Chief, manage the day-to-day operations of an assigned shift.
3. Consistently promote a professional image of the District during the performance of all duties.
4. Participate in reviewing applicable state and national regulations and standards, including researching, analyzing, and interpreting the standards to ensure District compliance.
5. Development of policies/guidelines necessary to ensure efficient and effective emergency and non-emergency operations of the District.
6. Clearly and concisely communicate, both verbally and in writing, information necessary to successfully conduct all duties and responsibilities.
7. Supervise, train, and coordinate work of assigned staff, including scheduling, delegating work assignments, conducting performance evaluations, imposing coaching, mentoring, and disciplinary actions following District policies, guidelines, member handbook, and directives. 8. Ensure all line personnel are provided with the necessary information, training, supplies, and equipment to deliver quality emergency services. Assign workloads, establish and maintain work schedules, and allocate personnel to ensure the proper allocation/management of assigned resources, thereby facilitating the daily mission of the District.
9. Attend all required meetings and training sessions as mandated by the District.
10. Interact and cooperate positively and professionally with all personnel and customers of the District.
11. Safely, competently, and efficiently operate all required District apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
12. Perform administrative tasks as necessary, including data entry, filing, report preparation, and record-keeping within the District’s records management systems.
13. Prepare reports and maintain filing systems concerning operational activities conducted by the District.
14. Conduct inspections of District facilities and apparatus as necessary and appropriate to ensure safe work environments and compliance with District policies.
15. Ensure the confidentiality and security of all personnel, patients, and other confidential documents, information, and materials at all times.
16. As directed by the Assistant Chief of Operations or Deputy Chief, conduct interviews with witnesses and investigate operations and personnel activities within the District.
17. Oversee the maintenance and procurement of the District’s operational supplies and equipment to meet the daily mission of the District.
18. Oversee and manage assigned program managers and the projects assigned to their respective shifts.
19. Exercise strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to collect, integrate, analyze, and use data and information, and compare and evaluate possible actions or courses of conduct based upon such analysis. 20. Prepare responses to a wide variety of communications that request factual information about the District or involve matters of established policies, guidelines, directives, or standard practices.
21. Under the direction of the Assistant Chief of Operations, act as the District’s Operations representative to other agencies when required.
22. Manage or assist District staff with significant projects as needed or directed.
23. Take and enforce proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. The Battalion Chief will identify unsafe actions or incidents that occur within the station or involving personnel assigned. 24. Exercise strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to collect, integrate, analyze, and use data and information, and compare and evaluate actions or courses of conduct based upon such analysis.
25. Properly operate in and function with self-contained breathing apparatus, personal protective clothing, and other specialized equipment as needed or required.
26. Maintain an acceptable rating as directed in the District’s physical fitness standards and fit for duty status.
27. Always maintain an available status when not working a scheduled or unscheduled shift, unless on approved leave.
28. Assist the Assistant Chief of Operations or Deputy Chief with data compilation for the annual proposed budget.
29. Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Fire Chief or their designee.
Education, Experience, Training, and Other Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in an approved discipline; master’s degree preferred.
2. Actively pursuing a master’s degree in an approved discipline.
3. Minimum of ten (10) years of Fire Service experience with increased leadership responsibilities.
4. Actively pursuing or completed the Managing Officer Program (MOP) through the National Fire Academy (NFA).
5. Possess and maintain Professional Rescuer CPR certification.
6. Possess and maintain State of Colorado Hazmat Operations certification.
7. Possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
8. Possess and maintain at least a National Registry or State of Colorado EMT-Basic certification or above.
9. Completed NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 703, 706, and 800.
10. Possess and maintain Blue Card Hazard Zone Command program.
11. Possess and maintain State of Colorado Fire Officer II certification.
12. Possess and maintain upon hire or promotion Fire Instructor II by October 2028.
13. Fire Officer III preferred.
14. ProBoard or IFSAC Incident Safety Officer preferred.
15. Possess and maintain upon hire or promotion the Center of Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation by October 2028.
16. Possess and maintain upon hire NWCG Firefighter 1, S290, S215, and L180 certifications.
17. Maintain qualifications as a driver of required District vehicles and apparatus.
18. Maintain all District-required certifications and training requirements.
19. Possess demonstrable knowledge of all national and local standards, state laws, local ordinances, and regulations that apply within the District and every jurisdiction within the District’s boundaries.
20. Strong public relations skills and customer service skills, to include interactions with other agencies, co-workers, and the public in both routine and emergency settings.
21. Possess and portray professionalism, initiative, leadership, and a strong work ethic that upholds the values, mission, philosophy, and Code of Conduct of the District.
22. Ability to coach, mentor, and teach peers, subordinates, and superiors while treating them with dignity and respect.

29. Possess the knowledge and skills to manage and remain current on all fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical activities.
30. Ability to work with minimal supervision and demonstrate reliability, thoroughness, punctuality, and accuracy.
31. Willing and capable of working a 48-hour shift or more as may be required from time to time to maintain minimum staffing and supervision levels.
32. Ability to pass a background investigation and random illegal drug testing.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
1. This position requires work in a variety of locations and conditions, including but not limited to fire stations, similar indoor work areas, offices, and other indoor work environments, as well as buildings under construction and emergency scenes of all types. 2. Strenuous physical activity is required periodically under extreme adverse conditions. Exerting more than seventy-five (75) pounds of force occasionally, more than thirty-five (35) pounds of force frequently, and over twenty (20) pounds of force constantly to move objects.
3. A substantial portion of this position will involve sedentary, administrative work in an office environment; however, the Battalion Chief also shall respond to emergency incidents.
4. Strenuous physical activity under extreme adverse conditions will be required periodically.
5. This position requires standing, running, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, bending, lifting, squatting, pushing, pulling, crawling, jumping, sliding, climbing, pinching, gripping, digging, spraying, reaching overhead, reaching away from the body, and performing repetitive motions. 6. Will be required to work in all weather conditions, including extreme sub-zero temperatures and extremely warm temperatures. 7. Must possess the ability to lift items more than one hundred (100) pounds occasionally, and up to forty (40) pounds frequently. 8. Work under dangerous, hazardous, and adverse conditions, including but not limited to IDLH areas, weakened structures, slippery and uneven surfaces, proximity to moving mechanical equipment, burning structures, broken glass or other materials, electrical currents, high places, and confined spaces. 9. Work may result in exposure to contaminated environments, including but not limited to hazardous materials, smoke, gases, chemicals, fumes, odors, mists, and dusts, which require the use of personal protective equipment. 10. Work may result in exposure to infectious diseases or illnesses, such as Hepatitis A, B or C, HIV, tuberculosis, small-pox, Covid-19, RSV, or any other known or unknown contagious disease or infections.
11. Work may result in exposure to high noise levels, requiring the wearing of hearing protection.
12. This position requires the successful completion of an annual physical examination provided by the District’s designated medical provider and completion of an annual physical fitness assessment. 13. This position requires the frequent use of sensory activities, including talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (identifying objects by touch), depth perception, and color vision.
14. This position will involve periods of high physical, mental, and emotional stress.
