THE NURSES OF THE WORLD OF DENTISTRY
Celebrating Our Dental Hygienists
It’s not always obvious, but oral health is a window to your overall health! During the month of October, we celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month, when we raise awareness about the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene and shine a spotlight on our dental hygienists. They are our unsung heroes and essentially the nurses of dentistry, who work tirelessly day in and day out to prevent oral health complications in our patients. With a comforting face as they set you up in the chair and an ear to listen, they are the staff member with whom you’ll likely have the greatest connection. Our dental hygienists perform initial screenings, take teeth impressions, conduct X-rays, facilitate regular cleanings, remove plaque, and more! They answer questions, walk you through proper brushing and flossing techniques, ease your concerns, and discuss evaluations and treatment plans. Essentially, they facilitate much of your dental visit, and their role here in the office extends far beyond just cleaning teeth. Just as nurses do, our amazing hygienists assist in ensuring the office runs smoothly and all the details of each appointment are documented. As you continue to visit our office and become a regular patient, you’re sure to develop a bond with our dental hygienists because our entire dental hygiene team has one thing in common: a
graduating from accredited dental hygiene education programs. They pass many exams before becoming licensed, and the education doesn’t stop there! We believe in continuing education for our entire team, including dentists, hygienists, office managers, and receptionists! We recently sent all of our dental hygienists and office managers to a conference in Nashville, Tennessee, where they learned and practiced
new innovative techniques on how to treat gum disease. We will be investing in new modalities to help fight periodontal disease including laser therapy, bacterial tests, and ozone therapy, and our dental hygienists are excited to implement what they have learned to better benefit the oral health of our patients! Here at Texas Sedation Dental, we are firm believers that at the heart of a streamlined and organized dental office, our dental hygienists shine! To our team of hygienists, we appreciate all you do for our patients, dentists, and the entire office. You are the backbone of Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center! Happy National Dental Hygiene Month!
true passion for delivering the best service for our patients. Patients are the priority, and we center our practice around this philosophy. Before our dental hygienists come to us, they undergo rigorous education,
PATIENTS ARE THE PRIORITY, AND WE CENTER OUR PRACTICE AROUND THIS PHILOSOPHY.

CREATE CUTE FALL DECORATIONS WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK
You don’t need high-end and expensive decorations to spice up your house this fall. You can make your own from things you may already have inside or around your home! Here are four DIY decorations you and your family can make this month. AUTUMN LEAF MASON JARS All you need are five things — Mason jars, leaves, glue, sponges, and tea lights. You can purchase fake autumn leaves at your local craft store or go outside and pick some of your favorites. After you lay out your jars, apply glue onto the jar and spread it with a sponge. Next, place your leaves onto the jar and let the glue dry. Finally, set a candle inside the jar, giving you beautiful ambient lighting for the season. GLITTER ACORNS Use these glitter acorns anywhere in your home to add a festive feel. Once
you have several handfuls of acorns, you can either dip the entire acorn in

glue and then add glitter to it, or you can apply glue to only the top and add glitter for a more rustic look. You can place this decoration in a Mason jar or any clear cup so the glitter of the acorns stands out. CHALKBOARD PUMPKINS If you want to create a welcome sign that isn’t a rug or a wreath, try a chalkboard pumpkin! All you need are a few pumpkins of various sizes,
APPLE CANDLE HOLDERS Carve about 1 inch into an apple, making room to place a tea light in the center. Once the candle is secured inside the apple, you’ll have an apple-scented candle! Use red and green apples for a diverse look, and please don’t leave candles burning unattended.

Scary Dental Facts
MOUNTAIN DEW MOUTH You likely remember your parents telling you to take it easy on the soda because it can wreak havoc on your teeth. Consuming soda in excess leads to a condition that is known as Mountain Dew Mouth or tooth decay. In the Appalachian region of the U.S., Mountain Dew Mouth is particularly common as 98% of people experience decaying teeth before they reach the age of 44. LIKE DRINKING BATTERY ACID Did you know certain sour candies have a pH almost as acidic as battery acid? While candy is much tastier than battery acid, it can be detrimental to the health of your smile! A 48-SECOND TOOTH-BRUSHING SESSION On average, a normal person spends only 48 seconds brushing their teeth, which is less than half of the American Dental Association’s recommendation of two minutes twice a day.
NO MORE REAL TEETH Roughly 25% of adults ages 65 and older have lost all of their teeth. Proper dental care could help to reduce this statistic, so it’s important to brush and floss thoroughly, visit your dentist, and seek help at the onset of problems or if something doesn’t look, feel, or seem right. ORAL INFECTIONS AND THE BRAIN An abscess, an oral bacterial infection in your tooth, can spread to different areas of your body if you don’t seek proper treatment. It can potentially lead to your neck, jaw, or even your brain! With Halloween just around the corner, these scary facts may be a bit spooky, but with proper oral health and regular visits to our office, you’ll be sure to avoid these horrifying oral blunders!
While it’s not something you ever really want to think about, our mouths can be a scary place if you don’t practice proper oral hygiene. While it’s important to brush and floss regularly and to visit your dentist for routine cleanings, it’s also imperative you understand the repercussions of not taking care of your smile.

CREAMY BAKED PUMPKIN RISOTTO
What happens in your mouth doesn’t necessarily stay in your mouth. The health of your teeth and gums can affect your overall health. To protect your general health, you need to understand the connection. Proper and routine oral care helps to keep oral bacteria under control and at a safe level. Because the mouth is the entry point to both your digestive and respiratory systems, when oral bacteria reaches unsafe levels, you are at risk of infections, gum disease, and tooth decay. Studies prove that oral bacteria and gum disease can lead to a variety of health concerns. On the flip side, certain health conditions also affect the immune system and lower our body’s ability to fight infections, potentially leading to oral health complications. The Shift Toward Plant-Based Eating National Dental Hygiene Month 4 DIY Fall Decorations Scary Dental Facts The Connection Between Your Oral Health and Overall Health Creamy Baked Pumpkin Risotto The Benefits of Plant- Based Eating HUNGRY FOR HEALTH 2 3 4
The appetite for plant-based foods isn’t slowing down — in fact, it’s rising. According to a 2021 Bloomberg report, by 2030, the plant-based food industry is projected to hit $162 billion! Eating plant-based means finding food sources that originate mainly from plants, inherently focusing on fresh produce, whole grains, beans, legumes, seeds, and nuts. Let’s explore the benefits of eating plant-based! PLANT-BASED KEEPS YOUR HEART HEALTHY. According to studies posted in the Journal of the American Heart Association, consuming a diet high in plant-based foods may lower the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease. Meat contains saturated fat, which studies show increases the risk of heart problems. But, it’s also important to make sure that your plant-based choices are heart friendly too! Load up on fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, and legumes and avoid refined grains, fatty foods, and sugary beverages!
PLANT-BASED LOWERS YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE. Plant-based diets are linked to lower blood pressure, which greatly reduces the risk for strokes, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2 diabetes. The risk of hypertension, or high blood pressure, increases in people who consume large amounts of animal products such as meat and dairy. Even just limiting the amount of meat and dairy in your diet is proven to make a difference! PLANT-BASED MAY REDUCE YOUR RISK OF CANCER. The nutrients present in plant-based foods reduce the risk of getting several types of cancer. Plant-based foods contain phytochemicals, which shield the cells in your body from damage and have awesome
anti-inflammatory properties. So, load up on those legumes, whole grains, fruits, and veggies — your body will thank you! PLANT-BASED CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. Typically, plant-based foods are lower in calorie density than meats and other animal products, thus, you can fill up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains without the same calorie burden you may experience from other sources of food. With all of the health-based advantages of shifting toward a plant-based diet, more people are catching on and making the switch or reducing their meat intake. What’s on your plate?
