GroundHawk Innovative technology to protect cables in the UK: centimetre accuracy at 5–10× lower cost than before

An excavator digs in an urban area and accidentally cuts electricity or telecommunications to a neighborhood. This is the problem that the software company Groundhawk, founded in 2021, has set out to solve. Groundhawk has developed a solution that 3D-scans the location of cables installed in trenches underground using high accuracy positioning. The cable location data is stored in the grid owners network information system, where it remains available for the next time the street is excavated. “This is 5–10 times cheaper than the traditional method, where the locations of cables are surveyed afterwards. Now the operator does it on the spot with all installations visible,” says CEO Christoffer Winquist.
