Vecima’s Mike Gannon widened the discussion from Wi-Fi to measurable experience, arguing that low latency needs to be consistent rather than extreme. He pointed to packet marking

for gaming traffic as one approach, and cited Comcast’s “ultimate low lag

broadband service” positioning as proof that smaller operators can benefit if they treat marked traffic properly.

The panel also examined why customers churn without complaining — and how operators can improve visibility. Whitehead argued for proactively spotting segment-level issues: “A lot of people that churn you never get a help desk call from… they’re silent complainers.” Finally, the debate turned to marketing, regulation and economics. Audience questions challenged whether Ofcom and advertising rules have helped create unrealistic expectations, especially when “committed information rates” can be far below headline speeds. One panelist argued the bigger issue is structural: “We’re selling 500 meg for 30 quid a month… the economics of the industry are a nonsense,” making it harder to invest for the long term. Another speaker said most consumers “don’t understand what they’re buying,” while marketing “are going to market the hell out of it,” leaving a persistent gap between promises, delivery and the lived Wi-Fi experience.
