$ VALUES
$M - THE BOTTOM LINE If you retain your own replacements, $M is a crucial figure to consider. It serves as a comprehensive metric for evaluating cowherd longevity, efficiency, and maternal strength. A higher $M means a bull’s daughters are more likely to: • Breed up on time • Raise a good calf each year • Stay sound and functional longer • Cost less to maintain (reduced cow size, fewer issues) Over time, this translates to more profitable, lower-maintenance cows in your herd. $B - THE BOTTOM LINE If you retain ownership, sell calves on a grid, or market reputation feeder cattle, $8 is a powerful terminal tool. It summarizes how your calves perform where it really counts, on the scale and on the rail. A higher $B means that, on average, a bull’s calves will: • Gain faster in the feedlot • Eat less per pound of gain • Grade better (more Choice and Prime) • Yield more usable pounds of beef That means more post-weaning value per calf, particularly if you retain ownership to the rail. $C - THE BOTTOM LINE $C is the most balanced, big-picture index Angus provides. Use it to find bulls that deliver maternal dependability and terminal value, es- pecially if your operation spans multiple segments of the supply chain. A high $C bull is likely to sire: • Daughters that breed early, raise good calves, and last longer • Steers that gain well, convert feed and hang valuable carcasses In other words, $C helps identify bulls that do it all, and help your operation make money in both the pasture and feedyard.
