The Gentle Touch of Care Tiny Acts of Kindness Can Leave a Lasting Impact

feel. So, I decided to focus on the little things — the small gestures that can make a huge difference. For example, as soon as you walk through the front doors, one of our team members is there to greet you. We will hold your belongings, keep the door open for you, and ask if you need anything. First impressions are everything, and we want to ensure our clients feel loved and valued as soon as they enter the premises.

“The tiniest act of kindness can save a life.” This quote from Charlie Mackesy’s children’s book, “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,” embodies everything my team and I believe in. We value kindness and courtesy so much that we have scenes from the story framed on our wall when you enter the firm — maybe you’ve noticed them during your visit! I understand how difficult it can be to discuss personal matters during estate planning. No one enjoys talking about what will happen when they pass away and how their assets will be distributed to their loved ones. Others may have difficulty creating a plan because they don’t want to think about a sudden illness or diagnosis that can change their lives forever. But I promise you that planning for these sensitive matters in advance will save you and your family more heartache and stress in the future. Because the topics we discuss at the office are challenging, my team and I will do everything we can to make you feel comfortable. That’s one of the main reasons we moved and remodeled our office! I wanted to create a safe environment that resembles a home rather than a law firm. Some offices feel bland and fail to convey a welcoming space, making it even more difficult to share personal information and concerns, and I wanted to change that. The adjustments I made around the office and how we interact with clients are nothing major. Some people believe that in order to be kind or courteous, you must do something grand. But that’s not always the case. Remember, people won’t remember what you said to them or what you did. But they will never forget how you made them

had at law firms, and I promised myself, my team, and you that our office would be different. While discussing end-of-life plans and long-term care can be challenging, I hope I can provide you with some comfort to make speaking on these topics easier. In honor of September being National Courtesy Month, I encourage you to focus on the little things and see how the tiniest details can make the biggest difference. One act of kindness can turn someone’s entire day or life around.

Next is our conference room. I know how uncomfortable sitting at an office desk can be, so I added something more comforting: a kitchen table. It makes our space feel more welcoming and provides a more relaxed atmosphere for you to share your thoughts and feelings. But the courtesy doesn’t stop there once you leave! We will walk you to your car, help you and your passengers into your seats, and ensure you leave our office safely. I care about you and your loved ones as if you were a part of my family. Because of that, everything I do is for your complete benefit. I aim to lift the stress off your shoulders and give you a sense of security and relief when tending to your needs. I’ve heard way too many horror stories of the negative experiences others have

Caregivers have a vital role that comes with a lot of responsibilities. They are in charge of caring for their patient or loved one, assisting them with daily needs, and ensuring the person receiving the care is as comfortable as possible. Some of us may not know what to do without them! Unfortunately, we’ve had instances where the caregiver passes away first, leaving the person they cared for to wonder what will happen to them. Many people don’t consider what would happen if the caregiver falls ill, becomes incapacitated, is put into assisted living, or passes away, and it’s heartbreaking to see families go through this difficult time. You and your family may have dozens of questions regarding the next steps, such as “Who will be able to take their place? Would the person be willing to accept the new role? Will they be able to care for the recipient to the best of their abilities?” The death of a caregiver can have a severe ripple effect on the whole family and requires immediate attention, which is why having a complete estate plan is so important. If you don’t have a backup caregiver in place, you could face a lot of stress trying to find someone to replace them. Sometimes, you have to go through an agency, which can be Why Appointing a Backup Caregiver Is Crucial Plan for the Unex

In the years leading up to your golden years, you’ll receive plenty of financial advice on preparing for retirement. You want to ensure you have enough money to last the duration of your retirement and maybe still have something left in your estate. This is incredibly important, but there’s more to retirement than simply saving your money and waiting. Author and speaker Dr. Riley Moynes has contemplated the psychological challenges that retirees face and determined that there are four distinct phases of retirement. Understanding these phases and preparing for their challenges will help you maximize your retirement. Vacation This phase is exactly what it sounds like. You’ll feel like you’re on vacation 24/7. You wake up when you want, sleep when you want, and do whatever your heart desires throughout each day. We’re free from responsibilities and can enjoy each moment as it comes, but many people grow bored of this stage after the first year of retirement. We begin to miss our routine and question if there’s anything more to retirement. Loss This second stage begins when we start to feel like we’ve lost who we are. We lose our routine, our identity, many of the relationships we’ve built, a sense of purpose, and for some, a feeling of power. This is also the stage where retirees can face divorce, depression, and physical and mental decline. It can be traumatic when you don’t see these losses coming, but this phase doesn’t last forever. Trial and Error This phase is all about trying to make your life more meaningful. Often, the best path forward is to invest more time into your favorite activities. Be warned that many of these activities will have lost their luster, causing you to experience some trial and error. Don’t give up! Something will click to give you purpose, propelling you into phase four. Reinvent Not everyone will make it to this stage. To get here, you must ask yourself, “What’s my mission in retirement?” Maybe you want to serve others by volunteering with a charity, or perhaps you simply want to improve your golf game. Finding that purpose and reinventing yourself around it will bring you more happiness during your golden years. MAXIMIZE YOUR GOLDEN YEARS Understand the 4 Phases of Retirement

to your needs. Other times, the courts can appoint guardianship to someone in your family. But this may

not be ideal — they may select someone you don’t want caring for you. However, if you have a plan in place, these hardships can be avoided. When you’re developing or updating your estate plan, be sure to appoint a backup caregiver. List the duties and responsibilities they must fulfill to help make this transition as seamless as possible. This will help your backup caregiver understand what’s expected of them and allow them to decide if they can take on these responsibilities.

Unlike diseases and illnesses, you can’t receive a diagnosis for being at risk for a fall. Accidental falls can occur at any moment, and while some falls will only leave minor bruises, others can cause severe injuries. Because of the life-altering changes unintentional falls can cause, it’s vital to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of these incidents occurring. Who is at risk of accidental falls? Although everyone is susceptible to falling, you can infer if someone could be at a higher risk of falling. For example, someone suffering from mobility or balance issues, different forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), vertigo, or Parkinson’s disease could be a fall risk. Where do falls commonly occur? Many falls happen in the comfort of your own home! That’s why adjusting your living situation and ensuring your home is free of potential hazards is essential. What changes can you make to reduce the risk of falling in your home? First, ensure your home has good lighting, as this will help you more easily navigate rooms and hallways, even when it’s dark outside. You can purchase lamps that are easy to turn on and off, but you can also place night lights in frequently used pathways. Motion sensor lights are also a great option! Speaking of pathways, be sure they are all free of clutter, wires, furniture pieces, and any other items that could be trip hazards. The walkways you frequently use to get to your bathroom, kitchen, living room, and bedroom should be easily accessible. You can also install devices throughout your home to help you keep your balance, such as handrails, ramps, raised toilet seats, shower rails, and remote-controlled chairs that can be raised or lowered. Another preventive measure you can take is to ensure your estate plan is complete. If a fall occurs, your estate plan will assist us and your loved ones with your plans and wishes. If you have any questions about what your estate plan should include, contact us today and let us know how we can help you.

glazing real or fabric leaves on the outside of mason jars with craft glue. Then add decorative stones and a wax or battery-operated tealight for a seasonal twinkle. Decorate your door. Wreaths are a DIY staple for several reasons. They’re easy for beginners to make and can set the tone for your home by offering visitors an autumnal focal point. You can buy a variety of starter wreaths at the craft store, so find one that suits your taste. Then pick up other supplies like leaves, pine cones, dried corn, and ribbon. Now you’re ready to hot glue to your heart’s content and create something distinctive. If you need further ideas, look closer the next time you shop. Many of the fun fall items for sale aren’t very difficult to make yourself with a few minor adjustments and a little creativity.

Housewares stores are currently

full of cute autumn decor, but the cost of refreshing your house’s look each season adds up quickly. Fortunately, you can do a lot for less. Many DIY crafts are not as complicated as you might think. In addition to saving money, you’ll create personalized charm none of your neighbors can match. Repurpose your pumpkins. Small gourds are incredibly versatile. Just sprinkling a few around your dining room table or mantle makes it feel like fall. But you can quickly elevate them using metallic paint to add cute designs, phrases, or names. Another option is to wrap seasonal fabric around them like a pouch, gathered at the stem. If you feel more ambitious, you can also use pumpkins to make succulent planters. Cut

a crater in the top of the pumpkin, pop in the succulent and soil, and press the dirt until snug. Light up the night. The soft glow of a lantern or candle is the perfect way to get the cozy vibes started. Instead of succulents in the top of your pumpkin, you can set wax and a candle wick to create something unique. If you’re bored with pumpkins, try the same with acorn caps. An even simpler idea involves
