Sumter Packaging has a large flexo folder gluer which will flexo print, die cut, stitch and glue in a single pass. “It allows us to cover even more ground for our customers, certain that we can handle any special requirement they may have,” says DeSollar. They have different sales cycles, different technologies, and different expec- tations.” Prior to the Goepfert press being installed, DeSollar sent a team including sales, production and maintenance to the OEM’s plant in Germany to learn as much as pos- sible about the new technology, as well as what it could mean for Sumter’s customers. “We’ve also studied compa- nies throughout the United States involved in high-graph- ics printing,” he says. As the Goepfert was coming in, the company also enhanced its already formidable design department with additional graphics and structural talent, new project management and design software and added a third ink kitchen near the press to round out make sure the company was fully able to utiltize the Goepfert. The company now has three ink kitchens, two in its Sumter headquarters and another in its Statesville loca- tion. “Mixing our own inks allows us to be much more effi- cient,” says DeSollar. “It increases our speed in getting out jobs and is also a great advantage from an environmental standpoint. You can mix exact amounts specific to every job, and a lot less waste is produced. Like many corrugat- ed companies we are recycling extensively and our scrap system from Air Design Systems helps facilitate that.” A
