2.5.3 Medical Emergency

2.5.3.1

Initial Response

• First 4 Minutes after Injury o

Follow First On-Scene Strategy (Section 2.2.1). o Call for help and indicate the need for the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and a trained user at the nearest safe location where AED can be used. ▪ AEDs are NOT intrinsically safe. o Provide first aid to the best of your ability (e.g. CPR if appropriate and you are trained to do so, control of bleeding, maintaining an open airway, and spinal protection), until trained personnel and equipment arrive. o Deal with work specific injuries (e.g. chemical or heat burns, frost bite, eye injuries, heat stress, gassing etc.) o Request any other resources required. If safe to do so, move casualty(s) to safe area(s) for further medical assessment and treatment. o Follow AED sequence and provide first aid care and treatment within scope of training until transport is available and worker transferred. o Assess the need for transport to a Health Centre or Unit via an Emergency Conveyance Vehicle (ECV), ambulance or via Medivac. o Organize ECV, ambulance or Medivac by calling 911 from a land line; 911 from a cell phone or the STARS Emergency Link Centre at 1-888-888-4567 if using a satellite phone. o Take first professional Advanced Life Support actions to stabilize casualty(s). o Determine closest ambulance location, any required specialized equipment and response time (one-way).

• First 60 Minutes after Injury o

• First Four Hours after Injury o

Casualty(s) should be at a Health Centre or Unit if transported via ECV, ambulance or Medivac. o Medical personnel will assess condition or patient(s), provide necessary treatment, monitor progress and follow up.

• Time after Injury: Dependant on Case o

Appropriate medical care or specialist required for treatment of the injury or illness.
