When an emergency call comes into the 24-hour Emergency Link Centre, the Link Centre Communications Specialist clarifies the location and the nature of the emergency. As required, the Communications Specialist can contact and link together all local emergency services (e.g. RCMP, Fire, Search and Rescue) and the appropriate Medivac transportation providers (EMS, Rotor Wing, Fixed Wing), emergency physicians and hospital personnel into an online conversation. One of the Link Centre’s primary roles is to connect all emergency and medical services into a single conversation to determine the most effective medical response for the patient depending on the particular situation. This includes the immediate coordination of medical advice, medical referral and transportation as required. This helps ensure that the appropriate emergency response is determined and delivered as quickly as possible. The Link Centre is not a replacement for 9-1-1 services or for any required day-to-day on-site medical coverage, i.e. on-site medics. STARS Helicopter The Emergency Link Centre answers all requests for STARS helicopters. The Link Centre stays in direct communication with the STARS helicopter (if activated) providing flight following as well as facilitating communication between STARS and ground resources. The air medical crew work independently, but have the availability of online communication with the referral emergency physician (flight doctor) at any time during the mission.
