Indigenous Relations
In regard to emergency planning on Indigenous lands, the Chief and Band Council are the Local Authority (similar to a Municipality or County).
Indigenous Services Canada
Indigenous Services Canada works with First Nations, Inuit, other federal departments and provincial and territorial partners to support healthy First Nations and Inuit individuals, families and communities. Working with partners they strive to improve health outcomes, provide access to quality health services and support greater control of the health system by First Nations and Inuit. Under Indigenous Services Canada, the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch supports the delivery of public health and health promotion services on-reserve and in Inuit communities. It also provides drug, dental and ancillary health services to First Nations and Inuit people regardless of residence. The Branch also provides primary care services on-reserve in remote and isolated areas, where there are no provincial services readily available.
Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada
Indian Oil and Gas Canada (IOGC) is an agency within Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada. Indian Oil and Gas Canada works closely with First Nations communities to manage First Nations’ Oil and Gas Resources. Notify both Indian Oil and Gas Canada and Indigenous Services Canada if an emergency impacts First Nations people or lands. Both agencies have previously stated that they will not take an active emergency response role. 3.1.2.6 Transport Canada Transport Canada supports the government’s environmental agenda through policies, regulations and programs that work to reduce the harmful impact of all transportation modes on Canada’s air and water. Transport Canada, based on risks develops safety standards and regulations, provides oversight and gives expert advice (through the Canadian Transport Emergency Centre – CANUTEC) on dangerous goods accidents to promote public safety in the transportation of dangerous goods by all modes of transport in Canada. 3.1.2.7 Transportation SafetyBoard of Canada The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is an independent agency that advances transportation safety by investigating occurrences in the marine, pipeline, rail and air modes of transportation. Investigation staff are located in various regional and field offices across Canada where they are able to respond to transportation occurrences anywhere in the country.
