breached about thirty yards away. The three of us sat there in awe and terror as the waves from the impact rocked our small three-man canoe. The fear was quickly replaced by adrenaline and excitement while another, smaller spout could be heard in the same direction. As the sounds of the whales breaching slowly faded, we relaxed. We made our way back to the Club, laughing and feeling grateful as we navigated the channel past Old Man’s back to the beach with nothing but moonlight to guide us. We unloaded, moored the canoe, and swam back to shore while people still dining at Michel’s looked on in surprise. The next day, I told my dad the whole story. He told me that he’d only caught one Awa‘awa in his lifetime, and that my grandpa—who was a lifelong fisherman—was always especially intrigued by the Awa‘awa and how to catch them. Having caught one of my grandpa’s favorite fish on his leader with knots that he tied decades ago made the experience even more special. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.
