TORREY BIBLE CONFERENCE SPECIAL MESSAGE

The Vision of the lo rd by Dr. David D. Alien Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church Hazel Park, Michigan

I n R evelation chapter one, verses 14 through 16, there is a detailed word picture of the glorified Son of God. The word “His” occurs eight times in these verses and prefaces the description of some part of His precious person. Let me call your attention to Revelation 1:15 where it is written “ and his voice as the sound of many waters.” Did you ever hear a waterfall? Have you ever stood by the Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean and heard the waves roll into the shore? “ His voice as the sound of many waters.” . . . in this expression, we are not concerned so much with what He said. That will come out in verse 16 in the reference to His mouth and what proceeds from it. I wonder what His voice sounded like. I know what He said. I can read that in the Bible. I wonder how He said it — what was the tone. How did He say, “Come unto m e,.all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest?” (Matt. 11:28). “His voice as the sound of many waters.” Wouldn’t it have been wonderful if there had been tape recorders and record-making appara tus in that day so that we could reproduce the very voice of the Son of God? You recall, He said on one occasion, “ Verily, verily I say unto you, the hour is coming and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live. The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice; And shall come forth; they that have done good unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation” (John 5:25, 28, 29). In John 11 we read how He demonstrated His resur rection power by calling Lazarus from the dead. I won der what it sounded like for Him to speak with a “ loud voice.” Well, we do not have the privilege of hearing the tone of voice. We know nothing at all about any accent. There may have been one. But one of these days, we are going to see Him and we shall hear His voice. What will it sound like to us? W ill we be able to hear Him say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” ? That’s what we are looking forward to. It will be worth it all when we get to the end of the way just to hear that, just to hear the way in which He will say it. When people speak of singers, they mention their range. The Lord can sing high and He can sing low. Consider the range of His voice, all the way from “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” (Matt. 11:28), to “Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” (Matt. 23:33). It was the same Saviour, the same voice. We have the wonderful expectation and blessed hope of hearing that voice, “ For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout ” (I Thess, 4:15, 16). 1 am expecting to hear that shout. I should hate to die ahead of time and miss that. If I do, I shan’t be mistaken, only disappointed. We are all expecting the Lord momentarily and we will hear that shout. Revelation 4 describes the same event. Toward the close of the first verse we read THE KING'S BUSINESS
