I love you, too.” Two days before this breath-tak ing statement, Ardyth had cried out in frustrated anger, “Why didn’t Dad dy marry another wife?” Surely at that moment any other mother would have been more desirable than the one she had! Experience with nine children has taught Mother not to become unduly exercised at either complimentary or uncomplimentary comments from her offspring. But she was arrested by her daughter’s use of “ like” and “ love.” Is there a basic difference in quality or intensity? There must be. An individual is blessed if he can like those he loves. Liking and loving are not necessarily synonymous. It is possible for love to be proffered and accepted by virtue of relationship. Sometimes the value of love is blurred because of attitudes between parent and child, husband and wife, friend and friend. Without motivation love can become hum drum, compulsive, lacking sparkle. On the other hand, liking bespeaks appreciation and spontaneity of rap port between individuals. It knows no dutiful “ I must,” but rather “ I want to.” The dynamic of a character makes the other a better person. It does not take too much observation to see that some Christians make no ef fort to be likable. What difference if one believer is surly, rude, selfish, if a fellow-believer obeys the Biblical injunction, “ love one another” ? Such an attitude makes a mockery of God’s power which He wants to give to all His children. This will make them both lovable and likable. Have you thought much about love in recent days? Do the people who love you like you, too? Of the three virtues, “ faith, hope, love . . . the greatest of these is love” (I Cor. 13: 13). Dare we lessen the effectiveness of love by not being likable? “God so loved . . . that He gave His only . . . Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have ever lasting life” (John 3:16). Great love is likable. FEBRUARY, 1963
