out why we are in this ideological mess in our public schools. And we would dare to suggest, once again, that it is in large measure because of the failure of our spiritual leaders, namely the clergy of our great Pro testant churches in this country, to sound forth a clear note concerning the great truths revealed in God’s Word. We read, “ If the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall pre pare himself to the battle?” (I Cor. 14:8). Over the years we have been hearing an increasing number of un certain sounds as to what God’s Word says and means and of man’s respon sibility to God. As a result, all too few people are preparing themselves to battle these days against the forces of wickedness even in high places. If only ministers standing behind the sacred desks will sound forth in clear, unmistakable terms, “ Thus saith the Lord” , there may yet be time to turn back the tide of atheism and spiritual indifference so that as a people we will be able publicly to call upon the name of the Lord and instruct our children in His ways. God grant it!

beliefs in God. It will mean paying double taxes — taxes for maintenance of the public, atheistic schools, as well as taxes for the support of private schools of their choice. On the other hand, they might elect to continue sending their children to the public schools, hoping against hope that somehow their children will come out all right in spite of the training or lack of training they receive there. But it does seem strange that the the- ist, and more particularly the Chris tian, is always the one who must pay the added expense of maintaining a school where his children can be taught the basic principles of his re ligious convictions. We never hear of any atheistic organization’s establish ing schools for indoctrinating the minds of their children in their non beliefs. No one has ever heard of the American Association for the Ad vancement of Atheism’s establishing any schools, either on the elementary, secondary or college level in order to propagate its peculiar doctrines. In deed, why should it, when the Su preme Court by its actions endorses and encourages the teaching of athe ism in our public schools? Let no one think for a moment that the end is in sight. These minorities doubtless will continue to make ever-increasing de mands upon our school teachers, by way of limiting their freedom to ex press any religious convictions what ever. We have been hearing a great deal in recent years about giving proper recognition to minority groups; all of this is wonderful and is to be encouraged. On the other hand, isn’t it about time that consideration be given to majority groups? Let the ma jority once again have its say, es pecially in connection with the pub lic school programs. It is our convic tion that the vast majority of parents favor the use of the fourth stanzas of “America” or the “Star Spangled Banner,” recited as prayer in the classrom rather than having them pro hibited from use. It may be argued that if parents want their children brought up with that sort of teach ing, let them establish their own schools. Why can’t it be equally ar gued that if the small minority do not want their children taught these verses as a prayer, let them start their own schools where their children can be taught their particular ideological notions. The majority pays the major amount of taxes for support of the public schools; why should they not have the greater right to determine what shall be taught therein? But we must go back beyond the immediate situation in order to find
