As we hit our summer stride, we embrace the essence of independence that characterizes this month. July is the sweet spot of summer as it stretches before us and gives us moments to come together with loved ones and reflect on the bravery and resilience of our nation’s journey. In this month’s issue, there is an endless supply of talent. We are thrilled to introduce artist, Kristen Tirney, and learn about her family and inspirations for her growing art and business. We’ll also hear from Chrissy D’Amico and learn about The Blue Dot Community, a group that offers community based therapeutic services for adults with disabilities. Last, we are excited for everyone to meet singer and songwriter Iris King who is releasing a new album this summer. Spring Lake’s talent and beauty lies in its residents and we are honored to tell their stories. We are also excited to formally announce the addition of two new members to our Stroll team. BLUE DOT COMMUNITY’S BIG HEART
BY RUTH CRAWFORD
C hrissy D’Amico grew up in Spring Lake and loved the tight-knit community at her fingertips. At seventeen, she interned at Family Resource Associates, a nonprofit supporting adults with disabilities, carving her path as she became an Occupational Therapist with the sole mission of returning to work with the adults there who so positively impacted her life. AN IDEA Blue Dot Community started as an idea during D’Amico’s time in graduate school. She saw the significant need to provide services for adults with disabilities after they graduate high school and to improve community connections. She wanted to create a space for community- based therapeutic services so everyone can access the close community she was surrounded by growing up. IT TAKES A VILLAGE D’Amico was joined by Lauren Payer and Kaylin Torres, both Special Educators. Their expertise combined with unwavering belief and dedication has helped develop an organization that is making strides towards a more aware, inclusive, and productive community. Blue Dot’s progress is measured by members achieving a goal, a local business owner providing an opportunity for inclusion, a smile caused by an act of kindness, and the organic connections happening in our wider community. A COMMUNITY The Blue Dot Community uses opportunities, such as volunteering, to connect with and give back to
“We want to embody the meaning of that. To help promote a world where our Community Members not only feel like they belong, but that they feel celebrated and supported.” D’Amico expresses. YOU CAN HELP Businesses, individuals, or families can become Social Sponsors. Follow Blue Dot Community on IG and other socials at @blue_dot_community. Reach out and get involved!
In addition, they partner with local businesses to better help the community understand and embrace Blue Dot members that are so heavily involved in the organization’s endeavors. BLUE DOT The organization’s name, Blue Dot: Social and Community Wellness, came from a Carl Sagan passage, “Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you’ve ever heard of lived out their lives.”
A NEW SPOT This spring, Blue Dot celebrated their one year anniversary and opened a second location on Main Street in Belmar to continue increasing therapeutic services and community connection. “To bring services into the community, and for the community to have so positively embraced us has been the greatest blessing,” says D’Amico. The Belmar location includes a market with handmade items with all sales going back to their program. Blue Dot also hosts inclusive, local dance parties and social gatherings.
the community, while working on vocational, social, and cognitive skills. They spread light to others, knowing it will enhance someone’s day while improving the mental health for the Blue Dot community members as well. As a primarily state-funded organization, they strive to keep services accessible to all Blue Dot Community Members. They knew the need was great when they started. However, they are now realizing just how vast the gap is for adults with disabilities having access to services.

A Rising Star Iris King
“When a melody pops in my head, I start thinking about all the little details to make it a song like the story, harmonies, instruments, and lyrics, which are my favorite part”
BY KATIE SCHRADER - EDITOR
Iris King, a rising 5th grader at H.W. Mountz has been singing for as long as she can remember. “I think I just started singing and never stopped!” The Joy of Expression For Iris, the allure of music lies in its ability to convey emotions. “I have fun when I sing,” she explains, “I like how every song has a different emotion in it.” It is this creativity that continues to push Iris in finding ways to expand her craft. Crafting her Unique Sound What sets Iris apart is her songwriting, crafting her own melodies and lyrics. “I’ve been writing my own songs since I was four years old,” she shares proudly. At 7, Iris released her first album, “This Farm.” The album includes seven songs and brings listeners on a journey with Virginia, a budding artist herself who leaves her farm to become famous in NYC, only to realize it is more fun on her farm. Iris finds inspiration from her favorite storyteller, Taylor Swift. “She’s the person who made me think about writing songs. I admire her for working so hard to make more music for her fans.” Iris applies that work ethic to her own goals. “When a melody pops in my head, I start thinking about all the little details to make it a song like the story, harmonies, instruments, and lyrics, which are my favorite part,” Iris explains. Milestones & Gratitude One of Iris’ proudest moments was the realization she could find her music on iTunes and Spotify. There is no greater feeling than knowing you can share your music with others. As Iris reflects on her journey, she credits her music teacher, Brandon Flynn, along with her supportive family and friends, for helping her achieve this milestone. Beyond Singing Outside her musical endeavors, Iris is drawn to the theater. As an active student in the Spring Lake Theatre and Dance Academy, Iris loves playing a role in their performances. “The Community House is where I feel the happiest. I am grateful to be a member, because it is like a family there,” Iris shares. Iris also plays guitar, enjoys surfing, and loves to hang out with friends and family at the beach.
Looking Ahead This July Iris is releasing her second album, Happy. “This album is about a lot of different feelings and how sometimes those are hard to understand or hard to explain. I wanted to have my songs relate to some people because they may be going through different feelings as they listen.” In the future, Irish hopes to release more albums and plans to write more songs with her on guitar. With a remarkable work ethic and passion, it is clear Iris will continue to leave an indelible mark on the world of music.
You can find Iris’ new album on iTunes and Spotify!

SAM COLEMAN A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
A lengthy novel, this story is about four college students who are all going through the struggle of finding themselves. As time passes, their biggest challenge is one of their friends who constantly needs help due to a dark childhood. Sam thinks the writing in the book is great and the only downside is the length and that “it’s hard to get into at times.” Beach Reader Rating: 7/10

The main character gets employed as a maid in a wealthy family’s home, but it doesn’t take long for her to be involved with the secrets and dangers that lie within the household. She explains the main character is very conniving and manipulative, always trying to get her way. Beach Reader Rating: 8/10
Jason explains that the story was slightly weird in the beginning, but now he can’t seem to put it down. It is about a wealthy CEO in California that commits slaughter and videotapes it, afterwards leaving a message that reads “This is where it begins.” Jason enjoys reading a lot of mystery novels and really likes the aspect of not wanting to set them down. drive by the little white hut, you can taste the Pork Roll, Egg, and Cheese. The true magic was having my grandparents around the corner. My grandmother tutored me in French and helped me with my summer school work. She loved to walk the “boards,” especially in the rain and they both were avid croquet players and enjoyed the old course on Ocean Avenue. The only thing better than these memories was building them. What made you decide to continue the tradition of summers in Spring Lake? Continuing this tradition with our children is such a privilege. We get to raise our children with lifelong friends I made here as a kid, and pass down the magic of summer friends, biking barefoot, playing on the beach, and perhaps even becoming lifeguards like their uncles. The extra time with their grandparents is the icing on the cake, creating their own unique memories. Bike rides to Hoffman’s, shopping with Gramma, and fishing with Grandpa are some of their favorites. I can’t wait to hear our children reflect on Spring Lake summers when they are older. How did you begin Kristen Tirney Art? It was an organic process. As a child, I gravitated towards art attending classes at Brielle Art Center and later taking private lessons in high school. After a decade of teaching, I stepped away when my son JT was born. Around the same time, we moved and I loved putting my creative skills to work through the process of interior design. Feeling uninspired by available artwork, I began painting, starting on my kitchen floor with a canvas and paint. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I slowly took over the living room, and soon after I began posting my work

K risten Tirney, a life-long summer resident, has a deep bond with Spring Lake, a town that has provided and continues to create a lifetime of memories. Now, as she continues the tradition with her own children, Kristen and her husband Jeff, embrace the magic of summer friendships and carefree, seaside living. We sat down with Kristen, an accomplished artist, to discuss her love of Spring Lake, artwork, and her latest accomplishment, a fashion collaboration with Fanm Mon.
What were the best parts of your childhood summers in Spring Lake? Spring Lake has been a part of my family for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories are from my grandparents’ home on Monroe where wiffle ball games filled our evenings long after the sun went down. My parents’ first house was a stone’s throw from Hoffman’s, and morning bike rides with my dad, especially to Sidoroff’s were a highlight. Though long since operating, sometimes when you

on Instagram. The ability to share artwork so fluidly and directly with a large audience was pivotal for building my brand and business. search of my artwork. We connected and I created custom panels for her home, which was a surreal moment as well. This past year, I had a Hermes inspired painting displayed for sale in Bergdorf Goodman in New York City as well as work published in VOGUE, Home and Gardens, and World of Interiors. CBS news anchor, Jessica Kartaljia, interviewed me at our home for a TV segment about my artwork. Later, she hosted a live interview at a solo art show held by Neiman Marcus where models walked a runway in the couture creations which inspired my artwork displayed throughout the store. Each of these experiences encouraged me to continue to grow my business. How has fashion influenced your creative inspiration? Designers such as Monique Llhuillier, Zimmermann, and Oscar de la Renta create works of art when they design runway pieces. I am inspired to translate the beauty and craftsmanship in couture dresses, but also the texture of the embroidery and appliques through various materials such as metal, wallpaper, thick paste, chrome etc. Recently, there have been many evident collaborations between artists and fashion brands and designers. French artist Alexandre Benjamin Navet collaborated with Van
Sophia Demirtas, founder and owner of Fanm Mon, tagged me in a post on Instagram. She mentioned she came across a painting I had made of poppy flowers by chance, and was inspired by it to create her latest collection of embroidered dresses. This opened the door to connect and collaborate. For the past year, we have worked together to design a collection of 12 dresses. It has been an amazing experience to bring my artwork full circle back into designing. Sophia’s craftsmanship utilizing hand embroidery and made to order process parallels the one of a kind aspect that a fine art painting holds. I am looking forward to hosting a fun shopping event on July 11th at our home to showcase my fashion collaboration with Fanm Mon. Guests will also be able to shop Tribeca Darling jewelry, owned by Spring Lake local Tracey Brennan, along with other top brands and local talent Anthony Ferraro will provide live music. I am excited to share my artwork and collaboration with my local shore family and friends. The event is open to the public. If you are interested in attending please RSVP to kristentirneyart@gmail.com for more details.
How has the support of your family contributed to your success?
My amazing husband, Jeff, is the forefront of why this has worked. He has encouraged me from day one. When I began to evolve and wanted to frame my work, he bought wood and built me floater frames in our garage. As I grew, I was able to wholesale frames, but he is still the one up at nights framing the artwork for me! I often have opportunities for trunk shows or fundraisers, and he tirelessly helps frame, pack and transport my work while managing our three children’s busy schedules. We are a great team. You have had some pretty well known collectors. Tell us about that! I will never forget getting a message from Mindy Kaling telling me she loved my work. BY SHAUNA OSBORNE, NATIONAL EDITOR
AS SUMMER COMES into full glory, the importance of sunscreen becomes paramount. With longer days and stronger sunbeams, our time outdoors calls for vigilant sun protection. In 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made significant updates to sunscreen labeling guidelines, urging consumers to base their choices on three key criteria: 1 / Spectrum Coverage: Savvy sunscreen shoppers prioritize products offering “broad-spectrum coverage.” This term signifies protection across the entire UV spectrum, shielding both surface and deep skin tissues from sun damage. UVA rays accelerate skin aging, while UVB rays cause reddening and sunburn, and both are linked to skin cancer risks. 2 / Sun Protection Factor (SPF): SPF measures a product’s efficacy against UVB rays. While the FDA recommends SPF 15 as a minimum, dermatologists and the American Academy of Dermatology advocate for SPF 30 or higher. A higher SPF translates to better defense; SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays, whereas SPF 30 blocks around 97%. 3 / Water-Resistant Protection: Gone are the days of “waterproof” or “sweatproof” labels, as all sunscreens eventually wash off, according to the FDA. Instead, look for “water-resistant” sunscreens, indicating effectiveness even after exposure to water. These products specify whether they remain protective after 40 or 80 minutes of water exposure, along with reapplication instructions. In addition to these essential factors, consider your application method. Sunscreens come in various forms, such as sprays, lotions, oils, gels and sticks. Choose one that aligns with your lifestyle, keeping in mind that while sprays are convenient, they may contain lung irritants, which is especially risky for children.
Instilling good sun habits early on leads to a lifetime of healthy skin.
