AS SUMMER COMES into full glory, the importance of sunscreen becomes paramount. With longer days and stronger sunbeams, our time outdoors calls for vigilant sun protection. In 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made significant updates to sunscreen labeling guidelines, urging consumers to base their choices on three key criteria: 1 / Spectrum Coverage: Savvy sunscreen shoppers prioritize products offering “broad-spectrum coverage.” This term signifies protection across the entire UV spectrum, shielding both surface and deep skin tissues from sun damage. UVA rays accelerate skin aging, while UVB rays cause reddening and sunburn, and both are linked to skin cancer risks. 2 / Sun Protection Factor (SPF): SPF measures a product’s efficacy against UVB rays. While the FDA recommends SPF 15 as a minimum, dermatologists and the American Academy of Dermatology advocate for SPF 30 or higher. A higher SPF translates to better defense; SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays, whereas SPF 30 blocks around 97%. 3 / Water-Resistant Protection: Gone are the days of “waterproof” or “sweatproof” labels, as all sunscreens eventually wash off, according to the FDA. Instead, look for “water-resistant” sunscreens, indicating effectiveness even after exposure to water. These products specify whether they remain protective after 40 or 80 minutes of water exposure, along with reapplication instructions. In addition to these essential factors, consider your application method. Sunscreens come in various forms, such as sprays, lotions, oils, gels and sticks. Choose one that aligns with your lifestyle, keeping in mind that while sprays are convenient, they may contain lung irritants, which is especially risky for children.
Instilling good sun habits early on leads to a lifetime of healthy skin.
