SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT
Hello all,
A very (belated) warm welcome to all our new families and returning families to The Lakes in 2026. Hope everyone has settled in OK – amazingly we are already in the last weeks of Term 1!
For our new families, School Councils play an important part in Victorian schools and is made up of parent/carer representatives, teacher representatives, students and the Leadership Team. We are essentially the parent/carer voice of the school community and act as that conduit regarding school issues between the parent/carer community and the school. Council meets 8 times per year on a Tuesday and visitors and observers are always welcome!
Our 17 February meeting was our last meeting for the 2025/26 Council term. At this meeting we:
Had a walk through of the new kindergarten on the Primary Campus, facing The Lakes Boulevard. Operated by Kids First, it is now open offering both a 3-year-old and 4-year-old program.
Heard a presentation from our new 2026 Secondary School Captains on the new student leadership structure across both campuses.
Were presented with our 2025 Year 12 scored VCE student destination data.
Were presented with the 2026 Annual Implementation Plan – this plan sets out the school’s performance goals and targets for the year.
Were updated with updates to the school’s organisational structure. It has been updated in 2026 to reflect the changes to leadership roles, including the appointment of Ms Short to the role of Assistant Principal, Teaching & Learning.
Endorsed installing air-conditioning in administration and leading teacher offices.
Endorsed the updated Uniform Policy to reflect the Department’s policy that parent/carers no longer need to purchase shorts and pants with the school’s logo on them. Communication to clarify the updates was sent to families in mid-February.
Discussed the Fundraising Sub-committee’s plans for this year’s Mother’s Day breakfast and stall. The breakfast will be held on Monday 11 May (the day after Mother’s Day) and the stall will be on Wednesday 6 May.
Raised the possibility and support for Camp Australia to start offering a holiday program at The Lakes.
Requested that communication goes out to parent/carers around the promotion of the ‘nude food’ concept to Primary families.
Requested that the school review primary book resources and explore options for sourcing decodable books to replace the current primary readers.
Endorsed a separate uniform for students and staff in both the Athlete, Artist and Dance Development Programs on Secondary.
Our next meeting will be the AGM on March 17 at 5:30pm, where the results of the recent call for nominations will be announced and the new 2026/27 Council will be formed.
As always, if you have any issues, ideas, questions that you would like raised at our next Council meeting, or any other support, we are more than happy to hear from families so please feel free to send me an email to amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au.
Cheers,
Amanda Farrelly School Council President
