BARBARA YOUNG MEMORIAL TROPHY TOURNAMENT

The inaugural Barbara Young Memorial Trophy short-lawn tournament took place at Bury Croquet Club on 1 August, attracting 14 players from across the North West and Nottingham. The event used a Swiss format designed by referee Ken Jones, giving each competitor at least five games on the club’s fast, well-prepared lawns. Barbara was a long-standing member of Bury Croquet Club who sadly passed away in November 2024. She was instrumental in the development of the club and held a number of committee roles, including Chair, and latterly served as an Honorary Vice President. Despite the difficulties brought about by her illness, Barbara was determined to continue playing croquet whenever she possibly could, often playing despite being in considerable pain. She would frequently be heard to say, “It’s alright, my mallet knows what to do!” Barbara was well known and highly regarded on the North West
croquet circuit. She particularly loved visiting Nottingham Croquet Club to take part in tournaments and enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie that croquet brought her. Early play was dominated by Robert Bentwood (Fylde), who won his first three matches convincingly before being stopped by Tim Ash (Nottingham). After four rounds, seven players were tied on three wins, with Bentwood leading on net points. The final round produced decisive results. The key match was Bentwood vs Duncan Meachin (Bury), with Bentwood winning +6 to secure the overall title with four wins from five and the tournament’s best net score (+31). Results:

Michael Young (a senior analyst at Sport England), son of Barbara Young, attended in the afternoon to watch the closing games and present prizes, including the silver trophy, sparkling wine, and a £100 gift voucher to the winner. All remaining players received wine or Cava. The club expressed thanks to players that supported the event along with volunteers, especially Tournament Secretary Sue Worth and Tournament Manager/Referee Ken Jones, for delivering a well-run event.
