Off the Record Flipping Book

Off The Record

We decided on our name as we try to play our music as close to the artists’ original recording as we can. Off The Record plays classic rock and country dance music. We are available to play for any Grand club parties, private parties, and any gig indoor or outdoor, that wants dance music.

Kevin Hughes at 206-499-3055

Kevin Hughes Kevin was born and raised in West Seattle. His mother, bless her heart, “made him” take piano lessons when he was 12 years old. He started playing in rock bands a year later. He also learned to play guitar. Since retiring and moving to The Grand full time in 2019, playing music with other talented musicians took off. He joined the acoustical music group and was then asked to play with the Salty Dawgs. Shortly after that, he found players and started his band Off The Record. A year later, he was asked to play with Just Friends, and here he is today in 3 different Grand Music Club bands playing Folk, Classic Rock/Country, and Jazz.

Chuck Golden

I came to Surprise from Kansas City in 2010 and have lived in Grand since the fall of 2017. I have always been interested in playing an instrument since middle school, but back then sports took precedence all through high school. After high school, college, military, and career took up my time. Throughout all those yeas, I played some guitar and bass, but nothing serious. Fast forward to when I got to Surprise. I had a friend that played harmonica in a blues band. I said to myself, “Hey, that looks like FUN.” So that’s when I started taking playing the bass more seriously. I took some lessons from Ray Riendeau (a world renowned bassist that lived in Surprise at that time). I started going to primarily blues jam (special thanks to AZ Blues Hall of Famers Bill Tarsha, Susie Tarsha,, and Dave Forster for all their help and encouragement). I then formed a band with some friends that lasted a couple of years. One day at the tennis courts, Kevin Hughes said he needed a bass player for his band. I said I would give it a shot and the rest is history. WHAT A HOOT!

Jim Torrence

Jim got his first guitar at the age of 10. He took lessons for a month and hated it. He has been self- taught since then so he was able to learn plenty of bad habits! He played in bands throughout the ‘80’s where he met his wife, Marilyn. After getting married and starting a family and a business, he quit playing until he retired in 2016. This was when he decided to pull his old guitar out from under the bed and pick up where he left off. He finally found his way into the Grand Music Club Blues Show in February 2025. He is grateful to be able to return to the joy and passion of music that has always been an im- portant and defining part of his life.

Jay Lannon

Jay was born and raised in Southern Cali- fornia. As he grew up and dug in, he played the music of the ‘60’s through the ‘90’s. He has been playing ever since shredding country in the Rockies or blues in the Southwest. Now he is back to his roots playing good old Rock ‘n’ roll.

Jim Mullauer

Jim grew up in the Chicago area and started his musical career at the age of 8 on the piano and saxophone. In high school, Jim played saxophone in the concert band and dance band. Jim’s first combo band experience occurred in his high school Junior year playing saxophone and keyboard ( piano) in several small combo bands and continued throughout college. After release from active military duty, Jim continued his musical interest as a member of a very successful 4 piece wedding band playing saxophone and keyboard for 30+ years. Jim also has experience in recording studios playing saxophone. After retiring and to date, Jim is part of several local bands in the Surprise area including Off The Record, Mirror Image, and Breaking News. Jim is also a member of the Grand Music Club and has performed in several musical shows in the Grand community.

Cheryl Peterson-Karlan

Cheryl Loves to sing! Her mother tells her she started singing before she could walk. Music has always been central in her life. In her younger years, she began soloing, singing in choirs, and performing in musicals. In college, she majored in vocal performance and music therapy. You may notice, there is nothing about rock and roll here. Retirement gave her a chance to fulfill a secret desire—singing with a band. She was offered the chance to sing with a rock band called Sundance in Pepplecreek. This band made some great music for three years and then they disbanded. But new opportunities found her when their drummer, Doug, asked if she would like to audition for Off The Record. The rest is history. She really enjoys working with a talented group of musicians and it gives her great joy to see the dance floor hopping.

Doug Harris Doug is the drummer for Off The Record. His interest in music probably started in elementary school as his older brother bought records and watched music programs on TV. His opportunity appeared when he was able to start drum lessons at school when he was ten years old. Not long after, The Beatles appeared and the British invasion and he was hooked! Friends and he started their first group in junior high and continued to play through high school. As time passed, more groups followed allowing him to play throughout adulthood. Drumming was a hobby to his career in education, but provided so many opportunities to play rock and roll through the years, plus contemporary Christian, musicals, and even some jazz. So now, even in retirement, he has NOT retired from music and the fun continues!
