A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

End of Summer Term - 19 July

This week it was wonderful to welcome our new Year 7 students into school for a taster day. The students really enjoyed meeting their new forms, teachers and taking part in language, music and PE lessons. Our new prefects did a fantastic job supporting students and staff on the day to make sure our new intake really felt part of the Waldegrave community.

We have had a number of trips out and events this week: our Year 7 students enjoyed their visit to the cinema followed by a picnic and games; our Year 9 students enjoyed a trip into London either visiting the Zoo, the London Dungeons, the Natural History Museum or the London Eye; Year 10 Product Design students visited the New Designers exhibition and the Business Design Centre; our A level Economics students had the opportunity to visit the Bank of England and our final DofE expeditions will be completed over the weekend. Huge congratulations to Chloe, Ellie and Helena in Year 10 who won the Key Stage 4 prize at the London Moneywise challenge. Last weekend our Chamber Choir had the opportunity to perform at The Landmark Arts Centre as part of the Richmond Arts and Ideas Festival. The students accompanied Richmond Orchestra as part of their evening of Ballet and Opera. Their amazing performance has made me even more excited for our own Summer Festival on Monday 17 July.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

After a few cooler days recently, temperatures this weekend are due to start feeling more like summer again. It seems an appropriate time to remind our students of the importance of water safety. We are aware that large numbers of young people, including some of our students, have been tempted to cool off by jumping into the Thames, especially around Teddington Lock. Richmond Council, local Police and Fire Brigade are very concerned about the situation, as the currents in the river can be deceptively strong. Some of the young people involved have also been under the influence of alcohol or other substances, increasing the likelihood of getting into trouble in the water. Cold water shock is also a significant risk, no matter how fit someone is. It causes panic, anxiety, disorientation and loss of muscular control, leading to the sufferer gasping for air and as a result, inhaling water. Year 7 have had an assembly on the topic from members of the RNLI this week. We would appreciate your support in reminding your children about the risks associated with open water, to allow everyone to have a safe and enjoyable summer.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

I would like to congratulate Year 8 on their positive attitude. So many teachers have commented on how well Year 8 have been doing in their lessons and in their extra curricular activities. Let’s keep it up for the rest of the year! The Battle of the Books annual competition for Richmond Borough secondary schools took place at Twickenham School on Wednesday which a group of Year 8 students attended. The competition was tough but our students really enjoyed the event. They were enthusiastic and collaborative, worked brilliantly as a team; and were awarded a very close third place. Congratulations and thank you to: Ava S, Nimisha C, Alexa M, Meg S, Nashwa Z, Emma W, Amelie W, Coco B. We had the Year 8 Rounders Tournament last week. They came third place overall. Jasmine was Waldegrave’s player of the tournament, scoring either a full or half rounder in 4 of the 5 matches she played. The team performed excellently, beating Teddington and Turing House.

Well done to 8PFO for getting the most epraise points in Year 8. Second was 8SPI and third 8STH. Congratulations!

The end of the term is drawing close, but this is a reminder to Year 8 that standards still need to be kept up in regards to uniform and participation and behaviour in lessons. Let’s end the Year off positively!
