A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Year 12 students have had yet another busy week. On Wednesday, as part of our partnership with St Paul’s school, 8 prospective Medical School applicants attended a UCAT preparation day, which they found extremely beneficial. Also, this week, two Year 12 students took part in the NPL Academy, a work experience programme run jointly at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington and at the school. As part of it, students have learnt about Intellectual Property, how to create prototypes, what a good business plan looks like and how to pitch a business idea. They were given the task of pitching the idea for a new business to a set of judges, then make a presentation for their peers about their week’s work to show their peers on Friday. Students also participated in a number of STEM activities and challenges with the rest of the cohort. Moreover, as part of the preparation for post-school life in the world of work, yesterday, a number of Year 12 students were invited to attend the World of Work Conference organised by the Worshipful Company of World Traders to support them in developing their working knowledge and skill base. Our students undertook a number of workshops with interactive exercises aimed to expand their knowledge of the softs skills and the working world hosted by a range of leading professionals from the City. Finally, today, the Year 12 Economics students went on a trip to the Bank of England. Students had an opportunity to look around the museum followed by a talk from a bank employee and some films about the work of the bank in the cinema there. After that, there was also a guided walking tour with a professional guide around the City of London. Next week there will be a number of trips taking place. Biology students will attend a residential trip to Juniper Hall, English Literature students will attend an English conference, whilst some of our Physics students will attend a Physics Summer School at Imperial College. We will also be hosting our first ever alumni event in the Sixth Form. Past students will be returning to Waldegrave to speak to the current Year 12 students about their courses and post-18 destinations. All relevant details have already been shared with the students.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

A Thousand Mornings by Mary Oliver A Thousand Mornings dips into the poet’s images of her beloved home Provincetown, Massachusetts, whereby she explores the endless nostalgia of beaches and shores, particularly focusing on how it can provide an escape from the mundane aspects of life. Her observations and attention to detail relays how even the smallest moments in life can encapsulate pure meaning, and evokes the tranquillity felt when immersing oneself in the wonder of each new dawn. Oliver allows us to enter a precious landscape of both memory and the clarity of nature, enlisting that we find peace in what’s around us. ~Recommended by Emily M, Year 12 student
