May Contract Awards Rally as Low Bids Surge Hawaiʻi contractors took home $68,824,702 in May, a welcome 231 percent rise over April’s $20.7 million in awards. The Hawaii Department of $6,796,037 to Jas W. Glover Ltd. for resur- facing Kuhio Highway on Kauaʻi. May’s third-largest award was with $6,070,423. While May’s $68.8 million in awards is encouraging, it still lags behind the $100 million to $200 million state agencies typically award each month statewide. But local contractors can take heart
from the City & County of Honolulu for $6,384,000, which went to Frank V. Coluccio Construction Company Inc. for rehabilitation of a 45-inch force main at Beach Walk in Waikīkī. By island, Oʻahu led the month with $50,511,742 in awards, followed by Kauaʻi with $8,154,685 and Hawaiʻi island
Transportation led state agencies with $44,575,872 in May contracts along with the month’s top two awards — $32,900,209 to Goodfellow Bros. LLC for expanding and modifying freeway access at the Kapolei Interchange; and
— May’s Low Bids are a reliable guide to the value of upcoming projects. Many of these bids are substantial, with this month’s tally exceeding $880 million in total.
