NLDC performs 2024 Winterlude The students of North London Dance Centre (NLDC) per- formed across four shows at the Wolf Performance Hall on Sunday, December 15th. “What an amazing whirlwind it was!” exclaimed Kelly Hajar, Owner/Director. “Hundreds of our talented dancers took the stage to share their love of dance with over a thousand family members and friends. It doesn’t get more magical (or more festive!) than that! From the tiniest toes in Dance Development, to the jaw-dropping talent of our advanced dancers, every performer brought their passion and dedication to life on stage.” Now in their 27th season, North London Dance Centre offers more than 80 classes per week for children and adults at their 1055 Sarnia Road location. Take a Hike! The main feature of the 41.6-hectare Sifton Bog is the floating acid peat bog and associated boreal plant life. It’s just a short 370 meter board-walked hike from the Sifton Bog parking lot on the south side of Oxford Street just west of Hyde Park Road to Redmond’s Pond at the centre of the bog. When the last ice sheet melted 13,000 years ago, a large block of ice broke off and settled in the sand and gravel there. When the block melted it left a kettle lake. Sedges, mosses, and other plants gradually colonized the edges of the lake. Hikers can enjoy seeing a wide variety of plants including sphagnum mosses, cranberry and blueberry, Cotton Grass, Pond Lily, and even carnivorous plants such as Pitcher Plant and Round- leaved Sundew at the bog. There are numerous species of birds and butterflies, as well as Painted Turtles, Green Frogs and Grey Treefrogs, small mammals such as squirrels and chipmunks, and fox and deer. Hikers are asked to use the official access points and stay on the managed trails. Do not feed the fish or wildlife – and beware of coyotes especially after dusk. Thames Valley District School Board Update As we hit the ground running in 2025, we hope that your holiday season was merry and bright. School Registration Registration for 2025-2026 opens January 20th for kindergarten and French Immersion (FI). There is a live virtual kindergarten in-formation session on January 27th; check tvdsb.ca for regi- stration information. French Immersion is a way for students to learn a second language while still developing their skills in English. If your family is thinking about FI, you should know that the only entry point into the program in Thames Valley is grade one. Your designated FI school is determined by your home address. To find your designated school, go to tvdsb.ca under “Find a School” then select “French Immersion Program” and input your address. For incoming grade 9 students, course registration for secondary school opened on January 6th with a fast-approaching deadline of February 10. If there are students in your home who want to register at a school other than your designated school, the deadline to submit the application is January 31 at noon. There is great information about high school options and requirements here: tinyurl.com/tvdsbcourses25-26. Construction Update: New Schools and Expansions Thames Valley currently has seven new schools in various stages of planning and construction, and an expansion at Eagle Heights Public School is now complete. A rededication ceremony is planned for early this year.
Construction is underway for Northwest Public School and White Pine Public School, the new elementary schools for Northwest and Southwest London, and they are expected to open this September. Construction is also underway for Turtle Island Public School, the new elementary school for North Woodstock, and the school is expected to open in Winter of 2026. Additionally, four new schools in Belmont, Lucan, Southeast London, and West London are in the design phase and are expected to open for the 2026/27 school year. Family Literacy Day (January 27) Family Literacy Day raises awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in literacy activities as a family. Did you know that if you spend just 20 minutes reading together during the week, that will add up to over 85 hours a year of time spent exploring books and stories with each other? Plus, reading helps expand your child’s vocabulary and has the added benefit of reducing screen time for the whole family. For families with older kids, just sitting together and reading separately is a way to connect and unwind without the pressure of conversation.

ARTISTS ALLEY Rinalize Bezuidenhout
In winter of 2014, Catharina Bezuidenhout found herself weighed down by gray skies and wanting to throw things at it. “I needed colour in my life,” she recalls. “I bought cheap paint and canvases at the Dollar Store and did a Bob Ross marathon, producing one colourful painting after another, filling my life with colour, the gray skies forgotten.” Catharina (friends call her Rina) paints by the name of Rinalize – had grown up in South Africa, with a creative mother who loved to share her skills and knowledge, motivating her children to be creative in various ways. “Creativity remained a big part of my life and I attended various workshops and did two years of fine arts in university for extra credits,” says Rina. “But even though creativity followed me through my life and my travels, it never became a prominent part of my life until I watched Bob paint his happy trees.” Rina found more artists on YouTube and eventually found her own voice in mixed media and acrylics. She likes to paint animals, flowers and still lifes, but her favourite is portraits. “I try to portray emotions, feelings and stories,” she says. “We all have a story.”
In 2021, Rina was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. “It brought my life to an abrupt halt,” she says. “Brain surgery impeded my speech and motor functions, but I was determined colour would fill my life again. I had to fight a battle I wasn’t ready for and art was my weapon and my therapy which kept me alive and going. It motivated me to stand, write and paint again. The battle isn’t over yet, but it has changed my life and my art language and it is

Pour the batter into the pan, gently tapping the pan on the counter to settle the batter. Bake the bread for 45 to 55 minutes, tenting the loaf gently with foil after 30 minutes, to prevent over-browning. Remove the bread from the oven. A cake tester or toothpick inserted into the centre should come out clean, and an instant-read thermometer should read about 200°F. After 10 minutes, gently turn the bread out of the pan onto a rack to cool. Cool completely before slicing. Wrap airtight, and store at room temperature for several days; freeze for longer storage. Being a Brownie in Hyde Park: Learning to Lend a Hand by Judy Colbert For me and other girls growing up in Hyde Park in the 1950s, Brownies was a big part of our lives. Then an organization for girls, about seven or eight to eleven years of age, Brownies in Hyde Park was organized around 1951 and led by Alberta (Bert) Burns, who lived at Bellamere Farm. She was my first Brown Owl. By 1952, when the photo at right was taken, that leadership had passed to two friends from the village, Doris Quinney as Brown Owl and Vivian Trethowan, as Tawny Owl. Far from being a simple village activity, Brownies was part of the much larger Souting and Guiding movement that, with some changes, still exists today. To refresh my memory, as I studied the photo, I turned to Wikipedia. Scouting was founded for boys in 1908 in England by Lord Baden-Powell, a military veteran who had served in India and Africa. Girl Guides, a parallel organization for girls began in 1910, followed by Rosebuds in 1914 for the youngest girls (later renamed to Brownies in 1915) . Their name came from a nineteenth-century story about two children walking through the woods in search of a “Brownie,” a magical creature like a fairy or elf to help their mother with her housework. On their way, they learned from a wise owl that children too can be helpful “Brownies.” The details of the story gave the organization its purpose and distinctive language and symbols, all of which had great appeal for young girls. Our Brownie meetings, usually held once a week, began and ended with a circle time around a toadstool with an owl perched on top. In our case, the toadstool was made of a material like papier mâché and was stored in a cupboard under the stage in the school auditorium where we met. At the beginning of each meeting, we recited the Brownie promise of the 1950s: I promise to do my best, To do my duty to God and the Queen, To help other people every day, especially those at home. At the end of the meeting, we returned to our circle to sing Taps: Day is done, gone the sun, From the lake, from the hills, from the sky; All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. It is a safe bet that almost all of us can still remember at least some of those words. Before Taps, however, we broke into groups to work on our badges. Our motto was “Lend a Hand” and as part of the process of preparing to be helpful, Brownies had to complete requirements for badges in areas like signaling with semaphore, tying knots, first aid, needlework and swimming. Baden Powell’s military background is reflected in many of the activities. For example, I have never actually had to use semaphore in my daily life, but there was a time when I could have sent messages effectively, based on the arm positions of the semaphore system. The details of the many Brownie rules are now lost to me, but I do recall that if we achieved a specific number of badges, we would earn a “Golden Hand” and that girls who had sufficient badges would receive their “Brownie Wings” and were eligible to ceremoniously “Fly Up” to Girl Guides – the next level for older girls.
Back Row: Doris Quinney, Brown Owl, and Vivian Trethowan, Tawny Owl. Doris and Vivian were friends who lived near each other in the village. Doris (d. 2015) was the daughter of Alice and Aylmer Quinney who lived on what is now Gainsborough Road, in the house next to Oliver’s Store that is now a Thai restaurant. Aylmer ran a garage behind the house. It faced on Hyde Park Side Road and was later taken over by George and, later, Ted Morris and is still in operation. The photo was taken on the front lawn of their home, in front of the Oliver’s living quarters. Doris moved to London after her marriage to Bob MacArthur, who taught at Hyde Park School in 1951. Vivian (d. 2011), daughter of Bill and Kertu Trethowan, became a teacher. She taught in Hyde Park (1953-1955) and then, until her retirement, at Oak Park School, in Oakridge. After Doris left the village, Vivian became Brown Owl. In 1972, she married Don Vanstone and also moved to London. Middle Row: Margaret Oliver (Williamson), Mary Ellen McInnis (Corcelli), Lorene Satchell (Waugh), Janice Webb (Morphy), Anne MacKinnon (Plaunt) Front Row: Deanna Snelgrove (Beatson), Dianne Peter (Flynn), Judy Colbert, Gail Richardson (Burns) Absent: Elaine Gram (Lorree) We also participated in outdoor and community activities. I remember, for example, a hike in about 1955, when we spent a memorable day in Dead Horse Canyon at the foot of Gainsborough Road. It was a pristine site then with wildflowers of all kinds growing beside the clear waters of Medway Creek. I also remember marching in uniform down Dundas Street in a massed parade of scouts and guides, military bands and others, assembled, I think, to celebrate the Centennial of the City of London in 1955. I can still feel the excitement of entering the grandstand at the Western Fair to the strains of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance. Finally, of course, there were Girl Guide Cookies which – even then – we sold door to door, year after year. By the 1950s scouting was a world-wide movement. Each year we observed “Thinking Day” on February 22nd, the birthday of both Lord Baden-Powell and his wife Lady Baden Powell, the World Chief Guide. The aim of the day was to think about the meaning of the movement and its global impact. It is many years since I have thought much about being a Brownie, but as I consider it now, I am grateful to our leaders and realize how fortunate we were in our little village to belong to an organization that gave us much enjoyment, lifelong friends, and the opportunity to be part of something bigger. FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 2025 DENISE PELLEY YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND THE MUSIC OF JAMES TAYLOR AND CAROLE KING London Yarns is participating in Berroco’s Blanket Mystery Knit-A-Long (MKAL) project to last throughout 2025, from January to December. With Mystery Knit-A-Longs, knitters sometimes do not know what the finished item will be – or do, but just not the details of pattern, stitches or construction. For this project, the Berroco Design Team has created a delightful mix of techniques and methods for participants to create their own stunning blanket, finished just in time to give, if they wish, to someone special, as a holiday season gift. Knitters choose their yarn colours from the Berroco Vintage palette or from seven pre-selected colourways. Designed for all skill levels, participants knit 20 squares, starting off with easier ones, and as the year progresses, learn new stitches and techniques. To supplement the instruction videos released each month by Berroco, Cheryl and Judy of London Yarns are offering monthly help sessions to guide knitters through the project. Each month as a new square (or squares) are released by Berroco, they’ll help you master the techniques needed to create the square(s). The squares are joined together at the end into a lovely 52 x 64-inch blanket. Sign up for the London Yarns online newsletter for updates on the workshop sessions. You may register for any or all of
