It’s time to admit it, gentlemen!

Breast cancer and family life

The breast cancer message is almost always wrapped up with a pink ribbon, isn’t it, fel- las? That’s not so surprising, given that the number of women affected is huge, compared to that of affected men, but the reality is that men do get breast cancer. And in all the breast cancer awareness publicity, it can be hard for a man to find his place. Many men would swap breast cancer for pros- tate cancer, if they only had the chance. A lot of people have the mistaken belief that only women have breasts, simply because the female chest is more pronounced and more eroticized. By believing in this fiction, men who find a lump in their breast tissue may feel that their manhood is threatened and enter into a game of denial for which they pay a heavy price.

Already less inclined than women to consult a doctor, men tend to guard their secret in order to avoid ridicule. Inwardly, they feel angry and frustrated, which prevents them from channel- ing their energy in the right direction. They deprive themselves of all the benefits normally sought by women, such as demystifying the disease, getting professional support, sharing with family and peers, dealing with fear, and getting empathy and respect from friends. Gentlemen, this ridiculous situation has gone on long enough. Hold your heads up and drive away your feelings of discomfort. Bet on essen- tials rather than trivialities, solidarity rather than isolation. Choose your battles! Now that you know that breast cancer does not have a sex, how about adding a bit of blue sky to the monochrome landscape of the pink wave?

Family is at the heart of everyday life for most people. Busy schedules are filled with work, school, daycare, and hobbies. Add to that all the shopping, housework, and a few other activities and suddenly you’re faced with overload. Such is life, vibrant and joy- ful, until the day when the unthinkable hap- pens. Mom (or even Dad, although it’s more rare) develops breast cancer. Even though breast cancer primarily affects women, men can also receive this diagnosis. A newly diagnosed person sometimes has to leave her job, either temporarily or per- manently, to undergo the appropriate treat- ment. The family has to reorganize and con- front increased expenses and a reduction in income, especially if the parent has to be sent away to be treated. Indeed, oncology centres are usually located in large urban areas.

It is quite understandable that parents feel totally distraught at the thought of having to leave their children and suffer through this ordeal all alone. Fortunately, many types of support are available. Common supports are loved ones, self-help groups, organizations and foundations that provide counselling, and accommodations near specialized oncology centres. With the Internet, web- cams, and social media, it is now much easier to communicate from a distance and experi- ence the support of family. It is important to stay in touch with children and stay involved in their daily lives; it helps make the long wait seem shorter, and it soothes everyone’s worries. In happiness as in adversity, it is comforting to be able to count on a united family. Send a clear message to those treacherous cancer cells — the family will have the last word!
