Minnesota Angus Association State Sale Coming Together Again – The Best Is Yet To Happen!

Dear Angus Friends,

It is a pleasure to be back working on the Minnesota State Angus Association Sale. I attended my first state sale with my twin brother Tony and my father Thomas Sr. in 1955, which was held in Pipestone, Minnesota. At that event we met many of the legends of the Minnesota Angus Association. After a few years away on sabbatical, I'm excited to be back! I had the opportunity to select a number of outstanding cattle for the sale, and I assure you, they are the cream of the crop when it comes to foundation Aberdeen-Angus. It's wonderful to see that the Minnesota Angus Association is hosting a state sale again! This event has always been known for its quality and serious-minded Angus breeders, along with a strong Junior program and Angus auxiliary. There is also a deep commitment to the Angus cattle and a belief in the future of the beef cattle industry. Don’t forget to attend the banquet on Saturday evening, March 28, 2026, at the Albany Golf Club in Albany, Minnesota. I can assure you the stalls will be filled with quality and it will be an event you won’t want to miss. I’m looking forward to seeing my many Angus friends at this event.

Sincerely,

Tom Burke 816.853.2697

From the archives

From the Archives of the American Angus Hall of Fame, Smithville, Missouri Historic Minnesota Angus Association – Since 1916

The original meeting of the Minnesota Angus Breeders Association was held on January 7, 1916 at 10:00 am at the University Farm in St. Paul, Minnesota. Plans were made for the very first Minnesota State Angus Sale which would be held in 1917 on the campus of the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. Over the years the Minnesota State Sale has had many different locations: St. Paul, Blue Earth, Pipestone, Granite Falls, Montevideo, Hutchison, Rochester, Cannon Falls and Albany, Minnesota. Some twenty years ago I had an opportunity to speak with Newell Nelson in person. He, along with his son Lorimer, owned Nelson Angus at Lyle, Minnesota. Newell went to the first Minnesota State Angus Sale in 1917. He took the train from Lyle, MN to St. Paul and attended the sale, where he purchased two head and was very impressed with the sale. Over the years the Minnesota State Sale was always one of the top events in the Angus breed. People that played strong leadership positions in it were Clem Chase, Brian Halverson, Tom Burke, Beverly Butman, Paul Krapf, John Reed, Vern Kerchberger, Bob Butman, Doug Ward, and Angie Ford.

The Minnesota Angus Association is now celebrating its 110th year in existence. What a true tribute to the many great Angus breeders in this state.

Breeder of the Year Mr. Frank Brand

A little history on our herd goes somewhat like this. We purchased our farm in 1974 and have focused on providing good looking, high valued cattle. I was a chemistry teacher at Lincoln High and somehow we had to pay for the farm. We started milking cows and also had a commercial beef herd. We continued

milking cows until 1987. We purchased our first Angus cows in 1980. Along the way, we raised

chickens, ducks, sheep, pigs and even a few Texas Long Horns. After selling the milk cows in the fall of 1987 we expanded our Angus operation. We grew the herd to about 200 cows. Our first donor was purchased from Woodland Farms in Illinois. She was Barda 244, and she was purchased in 2004. She had stood third in her class at Denver. After we bought her, the ultrasound data came back, and she was the number one BR Midland-sired calf in the nation. She went on to produce many embryos. She went on to produce the high-selling flush and embryos at the 2006 Foundation

Female Sale in Denver. Not only did she have extreme carcass numbers, but a superb docility score as well. She left many excellent females behind her, and also bulls. Interestingly enough, our top female in our herd currently is Brand Barda 4089, who has off the charts epd’s and phenomenal phenotype with a $C of over 423. (Simon, our grandson, will be showing a maternal sister in the P&G show in Louisville this summer). In 2008, we started entering bulls in the Midland test station and had the number one marbling bull out there, which went to Colorado. A Couple years later, we had the number two Bull overall from a donor from the Edwards Ranch in Montana.

Also in 2008, we bought another donor from the Baldridge brothers in Nebraska. Baldridge Blackbird S944 who had a major impact on our herd. In 2012 we started marketing all of our fat cattle through a natural program in California, Niman Ranch. This has turned out to be a good program for us as we currently are marketing cattle that run 70% Prime and 100% CAB through this program.

We started our Annual Brand Angus Bull and Female Sale in 2004. We started selling private treaty and then moved to an auction format at

Jana and Jeff’s farm. The next generation is also starting to build on Brand Angus. Simon loves showing Angus cattle and loves all things farming. He continues to learn, work and build his show cattle numbers.

Impressive good calving ease Schiefelbein Gable calf! He has looked the part of a herd-sire all summer with an impressive set of numbers to go along with it. A very soggy, dense made type of calf with extra spring of rib and muscle compared to his contemporaries. Grand dam NSF Elieen G77, has been flushed 3 times and has proven to leave behind females that are our very best. She has 4 daughters retained back with an average WW ratio of 108! Look for this bull to add pounds to your calves and leave you a fancy set of heifers.

Stemming from pathfinders on both sides of his pedigree, we’re confident he can generate high performance feeder cattle, or those highly sought after replacement females, combining phenotypic quality with genetic merit.

SWNK Bardolena 5132 is a bold and boxy made heifer with a stout pin set and good muscle shape down her top. Great structure, really nice balanced from the side with a long elegant neck and super smooth through her shoulder. Her dam is a full sister in blood to 3 champion angus steers and 1 reserve at MN State Fair and the 2022 Supreme Champion Female at the ND State Fair. Like all of our Bardolena’s her dam has a beautiful udder and teat size and 5132 should continue that being in the top 4% for teat and top 2% for udder EPD. If you like clipping and fitting the hairy ones, you will like this one. Great disposition, first to the bunk, easy fleshing, this one will be fun.
