9. 1946 Jackie Robinson (HOF) Montreal Royals Pre-Rookie Original Type I Photo (PSA/DNA)

Before Jackie Robinson’s debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers could be- came a reality, the pioneering superstar first had to prove himself as a member of their top Triple-A affiliate, the 1946 Montreal Royals. Breaking professional baseball’s color barrier on April 18, 1946, Jack- ie vaulted his first hurdle with flying colors, blasting an Opening Day home run in Jersey City (going 4-for-5 on the day), and later leading the International League with a .349 average, 113 runs scored, and 40 stolen bases. Jackie’s massive success with Montreal propelled them to both a 1946 Governor’s Cup trophy and the 1946 Junior World Series title, confirming he could succeed in previously all-white organized baseball prior to reaching the major leagues. Offered is a tremendous original Type I photo of Jackie Robinson during that fateful 1946 season, posed in full uniform with his Montreal Royals as a packed house observes from the stands. Original Type I photos of Robinson in a fielding pose while with Montreal remain exceed-

ingly scarce and virtually non-existent within the hobby, with the offered original representing the only example featuring this image that we’ve seen or handled. Measuring approx. 7” x 9”, this significant photo of Jackie Robinson, boasting exceptional clarity and contrast, exhibits moderate visible wear to the surface when tilted towards a light source. This includes areas of fine cracking to the emulsion and a heavy vertical crease running through Jackie’s right shoulder. Bor- ders of photo have been unevenly trimmed and a small piece of the upper-left corner has chipped away. Verso displays several markings including a few small areas of smudging, handwritten notations in both grease and graphite pencil, and rubber stamping reading “Dai- ly” in the lower-right corner. A typewritten identifier of Robinson also appears towards upper-left corner on the verso. Measures ap- prox. 7” x 9”. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA. MINIMUM BID: $5,000
