50. 1923 Zeenut PCL Paul Waner (HOF RC) – PSA PR 1

49. 1922 Zeenut PCL Tony Lazzeri (HOF RC) – PSA AUTHENTIC

This baby-faced photo shows “Big Poison” Paul Waner on his first card as a pro, dated three years before a better-known Pirates debut. 1923 Zeenut cards remain one of the most popular regional sets for their long list of stars (and unknowns) from the Pacific Coast League. The future Hall of Fame inductee posted dizzying offensive numbers during three seasons for S.F., including a .401 batting average in 1925. While Waner’s PSA PR 1 image speaks for itself, displaying corner

This first professional card of future Hall of Fame infielder Tony Lazzeri hides his Ruthian qualities behind an innocuous warm-up pose. Lazzeri showed massive might during his minor league career and slugged 60 home runs with the 1925 Salt Lake City Bees, hitting .355 in the process. While the PCL played close to 200 games per season in that era, 60 homers remains one of its very best power performances. Tony carried much of that bat to New York and became MLB’s first recorded hitter of two grand slams in one game.

wear and related issues, his central image offers distinctive S.F. uniform details that could be otherwise lost to history. Actually lost to history is the “tab” coupon from its bottom border, as many collectors trimmed that off to trade for Zeenut’s confection redemptions. PSA’s population report contains a handful of encapsulated examples across all grades and just three higher, so this presentable single will be tough indeed to improve.

This PSA AUTH example shows even borders with modest corner rounding and light surface wear due to creasing. PSA’s population report contains a scant four total examples and just one with a numerical grade, so you will be hard-pressed to locate one anywhere else, let alone one with a better score. Love of the Game is proud to offer a range of key stars from such significant sets.

51. 1932 U.S. Caramel #27 Lefty Grove (HOF) – PSA EX-MT 6

One of the most sought-after and yet difficult sets of the era, the U.S. Caramel issue was produced by a Boston-area confectionary company and featured 32 “famous athletes,” the overwhelming majority (27) of whom were baseball players. The cards were issued with a redemption offer, where a complete set could be redeemed for a free baseball, and three complete sets could be redeemed for a baseball glove. Complete sets are nearly impossible due to a rare “chase” card of Charles Lindstrom, but even the more plentiful individual cards are highly prized. Lefty Grove currently tops a user poll on the Net54 Baseball forum for the greatest left-handed pitcher of all time; we think there are a number of candidates worthy of the title, but Grove is as good as any of them. Underrated in the hobby among his peers, his cards are beginning to gain in value as fans begin to reevaluate his standing among the greats. This example has been graded EX-MT 6 by PSA, a clean and colorful specimen with a very slight registration issue and light corner wear responsible for the grade. Centered slightly high on the canvas, the red background is bright, a colorful, higher-grade card from a set where the images often appear drab. An outstanding example.
