62. 1954 Johnston Cookies #5 Hank Aaron (HOF RC) – PSA EX 5

63. 1955 Hunter Wieners Stan Musial (HOF) – PSA GOOD 2

The 1953-55 Johnston Cookies sets hold a special place in the hearts of many postwar collectors, thanks to their distinctive look and roster of Milwaukee stars and future Hall of Fame selections, including Warren Spahn and Eddie Mathews. No single card holds a higher esteem among these regional food cards than 1954’s beautiful rookie card of Hank Aaron, who broke into the Braves lineup as an injury replacement for Bobby Thomson. This set numbered its cards by each player’s uniform, and Hank wore #5 as a rookie. Aaron would shift to right field upon Thomson’s return and change to that legendary #44 for the remainder of his career. This Aaron rookie retains bright color, a clean front, and ideal centering for its PSA EX 5 grade. Its lower edge shows light toning, perhaps from stacking with sheets of similar cards, without dimming that superlative central portrait of the young slugger. PSA’s population report contains far fewer Johnston rookies – just 5% – when compared to 1954 Topps, making it a tough find in any condition, let alone such a prime choice for collections that prioritize strong player images.

Hunter Wieners printed several tough 1950s regional food issues, distributing these St. Louis Cardinals players as two-card panels on hot dog wrappers. Surviving examples usually appear as single cards, like this bright and impressive Stan Musial, and often show “hot dog juice” on their backs, reflecting their pragmatic role as packaging. Stan’s swinging pose, as with most 1955 Hunter cards, exhibits bright color and a nostalgic softness to its print registration. Any Hunter

card with reasonable presentation and consistent surfaces stands out for scarcity alone. PSA’s population report contains just eight encapsulated Musial cards, with two at PSA 2 and just one at 3.5. Love of the Game is excited to offer Hunter hot dog singles from several different seasons in this auction, including many of its best- known examples.

64. 1955 Topps #123 Sandy Koufax (HOF RC) – PSA EX-MT 6

As Topps and Bowman vied for baseball card supremacy in 1955, each side signed many raw rookies and “bonus baby” youngsters that teams kept on their MLB rosters for multiple years, whether or not they planned to use them. Sandy Koufax ranks among the best of those bonus signings and led the Dodgers to sustained success during his peak years in Los Angeles. This two-pose card accentuates Sandy’s youth and his need for patience, as it would take several seasons for the youngster to blossom into baseball’s top southpaw.

PSA’s EX-MT 6 grade of this colorful Sandy Koufax card speaks to its outstanding color, image quality, and ideal centering. Small corner touches, a print spot on his nose bridge, and a light edge bump might be all that’s holding it back from higher scores. His rookie remains key to any 1955 Topps set and this example will suit any mid-to-high collection.
