477. 1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinets John Tener – VG 3
Tremendous cabinet of John Tener, an important figure in 19th-century baseball and politics. Tener pitched 1885-90 for multiple teams and then retired to become a banker and, by 1908, a member of Congress. Tener organized the first Congressional Baseball Game, an annual tradition that continues to this day, and went on to serve as Pennsylvania Governor and National League president, making him one of America’s most seasoned citizens.
480. 1985 N300 Mayo’s Cut Plug John Ward (HOF – 2nd Base) – SGC GOOD+ 2.5 MINIMUM BID: $500
John’s exemplary “bat at ready” pose shows his Chicago uniform in excellent detail and displays one of the finest images that Love of the Game has seen on such a cabinet. PSA’s VG 3 grade reflects corner rounding and light surface marks that detract little from this terrific example. The technical grade in no way describes the eye appeal of the card; it presents far in excess of the assigned grade. The image is clean, and there is very little surface wear to the front or back. The mount remains as clean as it was the day it was issued, with just the slightest bit of wear to the bottom corners detracting from the technical grade. PSA’s population report contains this as its only encapsulated card, amplifying its considerable appeal.
