2024 Official OKC Visitors Guide

THE MINDFUL TRAVELER As you experience our destination, here are a few ways you can honor our people and places: Every destination has a story and OKC’s began with several tribal nations who have always inhabited this special place, long before it was officially a city. Our complex past also includes being the “Unassigned Lands” during the period when indigenous tribal nations were forcibly moved to the west. A land run in April 1889 created what we now know as Oklahoma City. This layered history can’t be captured in one piece of art or a single exhibit, so we hope you’ll take the time to learn and understand inclusive viewpoints of how our past is woven into the fabric of who we are today. When visiting cultural destinations throughout OKC, please be mindful of sacred spaces or traditions that may not be for public access. If you aren’t sure, just ask and our friendly residents are happy to help. SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability refers to doing business without negatively impacting the environment, community or society as a whole – kind of the gold standard for doing business. In 2009, the City of Oklahoma City officially launched its Sustainability Office and drafted and passed its first city-wide sustainability plan in 2020. Local businesses, including coffee shops, fine dining, retail, spas and more have embraced sustainable business models. As you visit OKC, we encourage you to be aware of the sustainability initiatives throughout our city: • One of the more unique, win-win sustainable services, the Downtown OKC Green Team, is a clean and safe program for the downtown area. One of its key responsibilities is providing supplemental cleaning and safety services within Midtown, Bricktown, Automobile Alley, Deep Deuce, West Village and City Center Districts. If you see an area of downtown that needs attention, call the Green Team at 405-240-1944. • OKC’s revitalization has included environmental stewardship that has transformed former EPA Brownfields sites into vibrant green spaces and attractions.
