Language Programs Chinese

On Saturday, February 28, three students from the Global Security & Intelligence program enrolled in Chinese language courses competed in the Arizona Chinese Language Speech Contest at Arizona State University. In the collegiate division, Embry-Riddle student Kaden Burleson earned first place and received an Amazon gift card. Nicole Siu and William Gorman tied for third place, demonstrating the strength and dedication of the university’s language students. Hosted by the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Arizona, the competition featured more than 240 students representing 37 schools statewide. Participants competed in Mandarin, building language proficiency, cultural awareness and public speaking skills. Spanish In the summer of 2025, six students accompanied by Professor Jose Ninawanka participated in a four-week study abroad program in Liberia, Costa Rica. Hosted by Universidad Isaac Newton, the program allowed students to complete Spanish III and IV while fully immersed in the language. Each student lived with a host family for the duration of the program, providing daily opportunities to practice Spanish beyond the classroom. Located near some of Costa Rica’s most well-known beaches, Liberia served as a base for cultural and experiential learning. Students explored the Barra Honda Caves, Baldi Hot Springs and Arenal Volcano while engaging with the local community. Through constant language use and cultural immersion, students experienced significant growth in their Spanish proficiency. “I saw their Spanish skills improve so much,” said professor Ninawanka. “Nothing beats cultural and language immersion when learning a second language.”
