A Course Module for Readings in Philippine History

A Course Module for Readings in Philippine History aims to equip students with relevant historical thinking skills by reading and analyzing primary sources in Philippine history. The emphasis on primary sources corresponds to the thrust of the new General Education Curriculum to view the past through the lens of eyewitnesses. When students are sufficiently grounded in historical understanding, they can offer sound historical analysis to make informed opinions and decisions regarding today’s most pressing issues. This module includes all topics prescribed by the Readings in Philippine History syllabus of the Commission on Higher Education, with additional topics to ensure a balanced selection of relevant primary sources from all periods of Philippine history as well as thematic discussions on social, political, economic, cultural, and environmental history. This approach enables students to understand the past better, deepen their sense of identity, and locate themselves in the greater narrative of the nation.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

JOHN LEE CANDELARIA

He is a Ph.D. candidate and a teaching fellow at Hiroshima University, Japan. He finished his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He has experience teaching at both the basic and tertiary levels at Miriam College and the University of the Philippines Los Baños, respectively. He is one of the editors of Kaalaman at Pamamaraan sa Pagtuturo ng Kasaysayan (U.P. LIKAS, 2008), the first manual for teaching History in Filipino, and one of the authors of the textbook Readings in Philippine History (Rex Book Store, Inc., 2018). He has published peer-reviewed articles and presented at local and international conferences on his research interests, including the Pacific War in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, heritage and memory studies, and international relations.

VERONICA C. ALPORHA

She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences, with areas of concentration in history and political science, from the University of the Philippines- Baguio and Master of Arts in History from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. She is currently an assistant professor of History at the Department of Social Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños. She was a contributor to the Saliksik E-Journal and has presented at some conferences in the Philippines and abroad. Her research interests include intellectual history, the history of social movements, and historiography.

AYSHIA F. KUNTING

She teaches history at the History Department of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Zamboanga City. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of the Philippines-Diliman and her Master of Arts in History from the Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology, Lanao del Norte. She is a candidate for a Doctor of Public Administration at WMSU. She is a licensed secondary professional teacher and counselor of the Philippine Sharia Bar. She has published articles in the book Kasaysayang Pampook: Pananaw, Pananaliksik, Pagtuturo (2012) and in the journals DIWA-E Journal and Saliksik E-Journal.
