Jose Rizal: Social Reformer and Patriot (A Study of His Life and Times) is designed to supplement the student’s journey to the historical account of Dr. Jose Rizal’s life, works, and writings. It aims to enrich and integrate learning through essay writing, under the integration activities in the second part of this book. It is the authors’ hope that students become ideal Filipino citizens imbued with Rizalian personality, characteristics, virtues, and values. ABOUT THE AUTHORS

AUGUSTO V. DE VIANA

He is an associate professor at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), where he is the Chair of the History Department. He served as the Chief of the Research, Publications, and Heraldry Division of the National Historical Institute. Dr. De Viana obtained his Bachelor of Arts major in Asian Studies, Master of Arts in History (cum laude), and Doctor of Philosophy from UST. Some of his published works include Apples and Ampalaya: Bittersweet Glimpses of the American Period in the Philippines; Kulaboretor! The Issue of Political Collaboration During World War II; and In the Far Islands: The Role of Natives from the Philippines in the Conquest, Colonization, and Repopulation of the Mariana Islands. Dr. De Viana has coauthored a social studies textbook series for high school. He has also written articles for scholarly journals such as the Micronesian Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Albury, New South Wales, Australia, and the UNITAS and Ad Veritatem of UST.

HELENA MA. F. CABRERA

She recently retired from the College of Commerce and Business Administration of the University of Santo Tomas (UST). She served as the Assistant Dean of the UST College of Commerce from April 1996 to May 2003, Executive Assistant to the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs from June 2003 to October 2006, and Dean of the College of Commerce from November 2006 to April 2010. She coauthored personality research articles published in international journals like the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology and the European Journal of Personality in July 2005, November 2006, and March 2007.

EMELITA P. SAMALA

She is a professor of Philippine History, Philippine History with Politics and Governance, and Rizal Course. She served as Chair of Pre-Accountancy and Management Accounting at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy. Prior to this, she was the coordinator of the Social Sciences Department at the UST College of Commerce. She graduated from UST with a Bachelor of Science in Education major in History. She completed her MA in History at UST and is pursuing her Doctor of Philosophy in History at the same university. She is an active member of the Organization of Social Science Educators of the Philippines, Philippine National Historical Society, and Manila Studies Association, Inc. In 2010, she was awarded Best Assistant Professor by UST.
