FEATURE OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
P eter Archibald was working hard. He had been at Haldane then as a permanent member of the team, hired by company founder Andrew Haldane. “I worked my way up the company and soon became Andrew’s right-hand man in many respects,” Archibald says. “He was mentoring me and, without me realising at the time, he had a succession plan in mind.” But in June 2020, as the company was navigating the confusion and difficulties of the Covid pandemic, company owner Haldane received devastating news. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The most optimistic outlook from the doctors was that Haldane would live long enough to see Christmas. Construction for 10 years, first as a skilled groundswork subcontractor Unfortunately, by July he had died. “When Andrew told me about his diagnosis,” Archibald says, “he didn’t feel As a leader of a construction company, adversity is inevitable – but it’s how you confront it and learn from it that matters
