MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Finance Committee
Dear members and grassroots leaders, This is my second term as the Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee (FC), starting with Covid-19 as a pandemic and ending with Covid-19 as an endemic. The Covid-19 situation has been described as the most devastating catastrophe our country has ever encountered. We, not only as a Club but as an entire nation, suffered an unprecedented economic blow. During this time, I, together with my committee, have practised utmost prudence and conservatism in overseeing our financial and cash flow management especially in terms of budgeting and spending for two financial years. These efforts ensured that TGC could at least break even, if not have a slight cash surplus after factoring in all the grants from the government while excluding non-monetary factors like depreciation. In these trying times, TGC as a landlord has been supporting our loyal tenants especially all of our F&B units here with goodwill and empathy. Because at TGC, we truly value all our stakeholders and strive to fulfil our responsibility to the community. With further rental aid from People’s Association, we granted further assistance to our tenants on a case-by-case basis, in addition to the government-announced rental waivers. Now, the skies are finally clearing up.With Singapore’s reopening and the resumption of social and business activities after two long years, I am excited to welcome everyone back to join us for activities and social gatherings. Here’s hoping that life in TGC will return to full normalcy very soon.

MADE FOR MEMBERS What makes The Grassroots’ Club membership appealing to people from different walks of life? We chat with four members to find out. The Grassroots’ Club was founded to build a stronger and more cohesive grassroots network by bringing members together. For over two decades, the Club has been a meeting point for members of all ages, from all walks of life. We have evolved over time to meet members’ changing needs with constant upgrading of recreational facilities, amenities and an ever-growing calendar of events and activities for members. With so much on offer, we invited four members to share their experiences and understand what makes The Grassroots’ Club membership so valuable to them.

Why did you decide to join The Grassroots’ Club (TGC) as a member? I was considering a lifestyle club membership to pass the time meaningfully and stay in shape. As a grassroots volunteer since 2014, I do frequent TGC and am familiar with the facilities and amenities. I decided it was the best fit for my needs and signed up as a member.

I appreciate that it is an exclusive membership for grassroots leaders as members have something in common.The Club brings together like-minded people to share ideas and experiences. Along the way, I get to make friends from all walks of life and beyond my own age group. How does a TGC membership fit with your lifestyle? Thanks to TGC, I have benefited both physically and emotionally. I mostly use the gym facilities to stay active and spend time at the members’ lounge to relax and take a break from work.
How does the TGC membership fit with your lifestyle? The gym and spa facilities have been the biggest part of my TGC experience. I use them once a week after dinner to stay fit and unwind after a long day. I greatly enjoy catching up with friends at the Club since I find it to be a very conducive place to converse with the other members. With the Club’s comprehensive facilities and convenient location, I think it’s a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Singapore! What makes a TGC membership attractive to people in their 20s? I think people of my age enjoy socialising. A TGC membership would be valuable because it brings many formal and informal networking opportunities. If the gym and spa would have longer operating hours, that would be icing on the cake!

How can the Club better meet the needs of people in their 40-50s? I believe that, for people in our 40s and 50s, we are focused on spending quality time with family and friends. Growing our network is also a fun way to meet people from different backgrounds. Personally, I think it would be good to have more golfing activities such as zone competitions. With digitalisation happening across industries, I’m glad that the Club is also embracing digital transformation to attract new members. What was your motivation for joining TGC as a member?
of my career. I was assisting my husband in running his cafe and barely had time to explore TGC’s facilities. I decided to rejoin in 2018 and have been enjoying my membership ever since. How does a TGC membership fit with your lifestyle? My lifestyle has changed after rejoining TGC. As a member of the Management Committee, I network and meet people from various professions with varying types of knowledge, which is interesting. Because I am older, facilities like the gym, sauna, and spa pool are my favourite places to unwind and have some personal time.
When I decided to join as a member, it was mainly for club activities and networking opportunities but TGC also offers fantastic facilities. I bring my kids swimming every week and we always have a terrific time at TGC and SPGG, the affiliate club! What’s the best part of being a TGC member? The Club is an ideal place for networking and has nice facilities. I like soaking in the Jacuzzi as it is relaxing. Members also get

Having a Halal-certified restaurant on the premises is great though I do wish it is as vibrant and active as the other cafes that are open every day. People in my age group are often grandparents with childcare responsibilities. It can be challenging when children are not allowed to enter certain facilities. I would love to see the Club becoming even more family- friendly.
