At the heart of the University we have Academi Hywel Teifi which provides a community for the thousands of students who speak and learn Welsh here. They promote world-class education and research through the medium of Welsh and are also home to the Swansea branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. The Academi supports students who wish to study through the medium of Welsh.

We work closely together with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and the University’s Branch is here to provide help and support as you study and socialise through the medium of Welsh. The Branch organises a variety of activities during the year including welcome events for new students, social events for Welsh students, and discussion forums to ensure their voice is heard on their education and educational experience.

Arwain is a bilingual app for students and prospective students who speak or are learning Welsh. Download the Arwain app to receive the latest information about our Welsh-medium courses and modules, along with information about the financial support available. You will also get information about the opportunities to live and socialise in Welsh while studying here.

By continuing your studies through the medium of Welsh, you will have the opportunity to access additional financial support. A high number of courses are eligible for Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarships and Academi Hywel Teifi Scholarships and Bursaries.

CENTRE FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS

The Centre for Academic Success will support you in developing your academic study skills to achieve your goals. They offer specialist support for students who use the Welsh language during the course of their academic lives. This provision is tailored towards the Welsh context, with attention given to the particular needs of Welsh-medium students, including bilingual practices, relevant technology and software, as well as the skills that are common to students of any language - critical thinking, composing arguments, referencing and paraphrasing, and writing and research skills.

STUDENTS’ UNION WELSH AFFAIRS OFFICER

The Welsh Affairs Officer is one of six full-time officers of the Swansea University Students’ Union who are elected each year. The Officer ensures that Welsh language students have equal rights, and that the Welsh language, its culture and heritage are at the heart of everything the University does. The aim is to ensure that all students, whether they are Welsh speakers or not, living within the UK or abroad, have a Welsh experience at the University

One of the University’s primary aims is to prepare and promote the employability of students. Academi Hywel Teifi works closely with the Swansea Employability Academy (SEA) and ensures that there are opportunities for Welsh-medium students to develop their employability skills and that it remains an important focus throughout your studies.

The Welsh language is a natural part of life here at Swansea. We are famous for our close-knit Welsh community.

There are plenty of opportunities available for students to live and socialise through the medium of Welsh on and off campus. It’s a great opportunity for you to make new friends.

At Swansea University, we have the GymGym (Welsh Society) and Aelwyd yr Elyrch which give you a variety of opportunities to socialise with other Welsh speakers in an informal environment. They meet regularly and organise a host of social activities including rugby trips, crawls, Inter-collegiate Eisteddfods, volunteering in the local community and much more. Or if you like your sports, we have Rygbi Tawe. This is the perfect opportunity for you to meet new students on the rugby pitch.

DISCOVERY

ACCOMMODATION

Another great way to make new friends is by volunteering with our University student-led charity Discovery. You can learn new skills and make a big difference in the local community and, most of all, you can improve your CV by having fun. Discovery has received recognition of the Welsh Offer from the Welsh Language Commissioner for its commitment to promoting the Welsh language and its culture through various means, such as providing volunteering opportunities in the Welsh language and the Welsh Language Club. To support our strong community of Welsh students here, we have designated halls of residence on Singleton Park Campus and Bay Campus. It will give you the opportunity to live with other Welsh speakers.

WELSH IN THE CITY

At the heart of the city is Ty Tawe which is the city’s Welsh Language Centre, where you can take part in a number of activities from reading clubs, gigs and comedy evenings, or you can pop into the shop for your Welsh cards, books, gifts and goods. The centre is home to Menter Iaith Abertawe which also organises a variety of Welsh language events across Swansea, like Coffi a Chlonc - an informal chat session for Welsh learners, Siop Siarad and plenty of Welsh gigs from big names such as Candelas, Adwaith a Bwncath. One of the highlights of the Swansea events calendar is Gwyl Tawe. The festival includes performances by a host of alternative, LEARN MORE

contemporary artists who use the Welsh language in varied and exciting ways. Amongst some of the big names that have performed are N’famady Kouyaté, HMS Morris, Mellt, and many more.
