A Smile, a Compliment, a Gesture CELEBRATE NATIONAL DO SOMETHING NICE DAY WITH HEARTFELT ACTIONS
When was the last time you did something nice for someone else just for the sake of being nice? Maybe you did something extraordinary for your significant other or bought a stranger a coffee. No matter the actual action, there’s an excellent chance that you helped improve someone’s day and caused them to smile from ear to ear. Every day, we get countless opportunities to show kindness and do something nice for others, and it’s up to us whether we capitalize on that opportunity or not.
older, and it’s not uncommon for them to forget things or call us at odd hours of the night. We always answer, though, because we know there will come a time when they won’t be calling at all. National Do Something Nice Day isn’t solely aimed at our families or loved ones; there’s always someone we can do something nice for. Sharing kind thoughts, like telling someone they look nice or that their

shoes are cool, can go a long way toward making their day. We often have thoughts like this, but most of us rarely verbalize them, even if we know they could improve someone’s mood or help them through a difficult time. It might seem out of the blue, but when you think something nice about someone, you should say it directly to them! Little gestures like this don’t cost anything, and there’s never a wrong time to do them. Sometimes, even a smile can make someone feel better. There’s a game I play when I’m in an airport that involves making eye contact with strangers and smiling. Everyone always looks so stressed out or serious, but when you smile at them, they smile back. It’s contagious!
While it might not fall on the same day as National Do Something Nice Day, National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day also falls in October and is an excellent idea for those wanting to do something nice for their loved ones. As the mother of kids who live all across the country, it’s always a delight when I get to see one of them, even if it’s just for 30 minutes.
My son recently moved to Frankfort, so he’s closer than he used to be. One day, he was doing something for guard duty and called me mid-afternoon to see what I was doing. He wanted to drop by for a little bit but thought I was too busy with everything going on. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I will drop anything to spend time with my kids. They’re very busy, so it’s the best thing in the world whenever they can take some time to see me. We often don’t think about how much joy we can bring to our parents by spending a little time with them. On the flip side, we live far from my parents, so it’s a rare treat when I can go out to eat with them or watch a Hallmark movie with my mom. Spending time with my parents becomes more valuable each year. Dave’s parents are getting
When you do something nice for others, it puts you and them in better moods, so don’t second-guess yourself! Make that kind gesture, share your smile with others, and don’t be afraid to say something nice to someone, regardless of your relationship. Your actions could make their day, week, or month better!

THE RIVALRY THAT REDEFINED ENTERTAINMENT CONEY ISLAND’S CUTTHROAT CARNIVAL
Stealing Ideas and Underhanded Tactics Tilyou’s success soon drew the attention of rival park operators. In 1902, he lured away the founders of the popular “A Trip to the Moon” attraction from the upcoming Luna Park. These underhanded tactics were common, as the parks constantly copied each other’s rides and acts to one-up the competition. Rapid Innovation Drives Change This competitive spirit drove rapid innovation at Coney Island. Over just a few years, the parks introduced groundbreaking new attractions like the Rotating Barrel, Thunderbolt roller coaster, and the world’s largest Ferris wheel. They transformed the public’s perception of amusement parks, elevating them from sideshows to immersive, technologically advanced experiences.
The Birth of the Modern Amusement Park The era of Coney Island’s dueling theme parks was short-lived, lasting only from 1904 to 1911, but its impact can still be felt today. The parks’ relentless one-upmanship drove the rapid evolution of the amusement park industry, laying the foundation for the iconic destination Coney Island has become. What began as a vulgar locale became a glittering symbol of American ingenuity and the pursuit of wholesome fun. While the tactics of these rival parks may have been underhanded, the lasting legacy of their fierce competition is undeniable. The rapid innovations, technological advancements, and shifts in public perception from this crucible of competition continue to shape the amusement park experience today.
In the early 20th century, Coney Island was the beating heart of America’s burgeoning amusement park industry. Three rival theme parks — Steeplechase Park, Luna Park, and Dreamland — engaged in fierce, cutthroat competition that dramatically reshaped this iconic destination. A Tawdry Reputation Transformed Coney Island’s reputation was once far from wholesome. Known as “Sodom by the Sea,” it was considered a tawdry, vice-filled destination. That began to change in 1897 when Steeplechase Park opened. Its founder, George Tilyou, sought to bring clean fun to the masses, creating a lighthearted atmosphere exemplified by his iconic “Funny Face” caricature.
Tessa’s Coaching Wisdom WHY GIVING YOUR ALL TODAY CAN PREVENT FUTURE REGRETS
When we recognize National Coaches Day in early October, we have a special opportunity to reflect on our relationships with the individuals who taught us the value of hard work, never backing down, and much more. Many of the team members working at our office have expansive experience playing sports for coaches or serving as coaches themselves in various capacities. Our administrative professional, Tessa, is an excellent example of this, as she was a Division 1 athlete on Saint Louis University’s swim team. She has valuable insight into the wisdom coaches can impart and the lessons we can learn from them.
youth. Since she joined us this past November, we’ve all been coaching her in one way or another to help her improve her skills. She’s great at taking instructions and always follows up with any questions she may have, which partially stems from her vast experience with coaches. However, Tessa also has experience coaching from the other side, as she’s served as a full-time swim coach. Few people are more qualified to talk about the role of coaches than Tessa! Tessa states, “The best piece of advice a coach gave to me was to give my 100% effort in the present moment because there will only be regret in future moments if I give less than my best. I carry this piece of advice with me because it has
proven to be true in all areas of my life. I can confidently say that I have only felt regret in times when I knew I had more effort to give. I’ve never felt regret in times when I can say with certainty that I gave my 100% best effort.” We can apply this advice to nearly every aspect of our lives, from relationships to careers. Additionally, Tessa found the most valuable lesson she learned from a coach was that nobody can take your accomplishments from you. We’re all unique and have our own set of goals we’re striving to achieve. We lose out when we start comparing ourselves to others. Tessa says, “Comparison does not achieve goals; confidence does.”
Tessa has had unique experiences with coaches since she swam competitively throughout her

Have a Laugh!
As a dog, I don’t think too much about my appearance. I can see the joy in my loved ones’ faces whenever they lay eyes on me, which tells me they think I’m adorable no matter what. However, some people are much more selective about what their furry friends look like. There’s an idea out there that black dogs are less likely to get adopted than other dogs regardless of age, gender, or species. Some sources even report that black dogs and cats can spend four times longer to get adopted from shelters than lighter-colored dogs. To offset this and encourage people to adopt black dogs, some inspiring and intelligent people decided to create National Black Dog Day! I’ve been trying all week to figure out why people wouldn’t want black dogs, but I haven’t come up with many ideas. I once heard someone say that black animals aren’t as photogenic as others because we blend into our backgrounds, but I can’t imagine many people think about that when considering adoption. I have to be very careful when I’m out at night to ensure I don’t walk in front of any cars, as they’d have difficulty seeing me. I once ran away when it was storming badly and didn’t return home for hours. My mom was so worried about me that I’ll never do that again! Maybe people don’t want to adopt black dogs because skunks seem to think we’re one of them until we get too close. I seem to have a run-in with a skunk at least a couple of times per year. Thankfully, my mom has a de-skunking kit on hand to clean me up and ensure the smell doesn’t stick to me. I’m struggling to come up with substantial reasons why people wouldn’t want black dogs. Every one I know is super sweet, and you can always buy reflective collars to help ensure they stay safe if they get out at night. If you’re considering bringing a new family member home through adoption, I highly encourage you to consider a black dog. They might just become your best friend in the world! –Bella The Compelling Case for Adopting Black Dogs BARKS FROM BELLA

FROM RESCUE TO RESCUER PANCHO’S INSPIRING STORY
In a heartwarming story of canine courage, a rescue dog named Pancho has emerged as a hero after putting his life on the line to defend his family during a home invasion. The events unfolded on a fateful night in early June when an intruder broke into Pancho’s home in northern New Mexico. Pancho, an 8-year-old rescue pup, sprang into action the moment the intruder entered the home. Without hesitation, the brave dog leaped at the would-be criminal, determined to protect his family at all costs. In the ensuing struggle, Pancho suffered a deep neck wound that miraculously missed his vital organs. But the attack didn’t stop there — the intruder then proceeded to kick Pancho repeatedly. Undeterred by his injuries, Pancho managed to hold the intruder at bay until others could intervene and restrain the criminal. Pancho’s family then embarked on a desperate two-hour journey to Albuquerque, searching for emergency veterinary care. Remarkably, the family ended up at the doorstep of Española Humane, the same rescue organization where they had adopted Pancho. The dedicated staff immediately sprang into action, performing extensive surgery to clean and
repair Pancho’s traumatic neck wound. The brave pup stopped breathing at one point, but the veterinary team successfully revived him. Despite his severe injuries, Pancho has steadily regained his strength. His tail never stops wagging, and he responds enthusiastically whenever he hears the words “good boy.” Pancho’s dad promised him a lifetime of rib- eye steaks to reward his heroic actions. Pancho’s story is a powerful reminder of the unwavering loyalty and bravery rescue animals can possess. If you’re considering adding a furry friend to your family, consider visiting your local animal shelter or rescue organization. You never know — you might just find your very own guardian angel, just like Pancho’s family did.
