INDUSTRY AWARDS ECOC 2023
In conjunction with Optical Connections ECOC EXHIBITION INDUSTRY AWARDS
Michael Lebby, CEO, Lightwave Logic accepts the award for Most Innovative Product from ECOC Commercial Director Emma Harvey
Launched in 2020, the ECOC Exhibition Industry Awards highlight groundbreaking achievements in advancing optical communications, transport, networking, fibre-based products, photonic integration circuits, and related innovations, these awards place a strong emphasis on technology and product commercialisation, showcasing excellence in the business landscape. The winners for this year’s Industry Awards were announced live at ECOC Exhibition in Glasgow.
BEST FIBRE/FIBRE COMPONENT PRODUCT RAM PHOTONICS for MEDUSA RAM Photonics Industrial, LLC has developed the Medusa, a high-density fibreised microlens array capable of supporting over 1024 collimated fibre channels. The co-aligned fibres can be SM, PM, or a combination, and can be placed in a customisable arrangement (e.g. hex pack, square pack, other) with as small as 250 micron centre-to-centre fibre spacing. Most significantly, the fibres are laser-welded to the fused-silica microlens arrays. With no epoxy in the alignment or optical path, the Medusa is the most reliable and robust fibre array in the market. Medusa fibreised microlens arrays offer nearly limitless scaling for fibre interconnects that cannot be matched by competing technologies. With a collimation pointing error ≤ 2.5 milliradians, and PM fibre co-alignment is ≤ 0.3 degrees, monolithic fused-silica to fused-silica fusion of each fibre enables average per-channel connector loss of 0.5 dB, with a maximum of 1.6 dB DATA CENTRE INNOVATION/ BEST PRODUCT MARVELL for MARVELL® NOVA™ The Marvell® Nova™ PAM4 electro- optics Digital Signal Processor (DSP) platform is the industry’s first of its kind, enabling the highest speed of data movement for artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) and data centre networks. Powered by a groundbreaking 200 Gbps/lambda optical DSP, Nova doubles the optical bandwidth of current solutions to enable 1.6 Tbps pluggable transceivers for scaling memory bandwidth of compute clusters, and enabling longer reach data-centre interconnects across campus environments. Nova extends the multi-source pluggable optics ecosystem and provides the advanced technology needed to alleviate data centre network bottlenecks as the industry transitions to 51.2 Tbps networking architectures.
MOST INNOVATIVE PRODUCT – PON/5G/FTTX HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES for FTTR SOLUTION Wi-Fi is still predominantly delivered from a single router, and as a result, the Wi-Fi rate experienced by users is only 40% of the package rate. Huawei FTTR provides stable premium gigabit Wi-Fi networks with a high connection capacity for broadband users and redefines the digital home experience. Based on point- to-multipoint all-optical networking technology, FTTR distributes fibres to all corners of user homes and SME offices. In the home scenario, one master FTTR can be connected with 16 slave FTTRs, enabling 2000Mbps Wi-Fi rates, handover between units is extremely fast (less than 20ms latency). In addition, Huawei’s embedded intelligent acceleration solution dynamically allocates resources for applications that need it, and up to 128 concurrent connections, as well as serving as the bedrock for future smart homes. In the SME scenario, one master FTTR and 32 slave FTTRs can be deployed as Wi-Fi 6 hotspots, enabling gigabit Wi-Fi 6 everywhere, seamless roaming, and 300 concurrent connections, as well as forming the network base for enterprises to realise digital transformation. OPTICAL TRANSPORT CHINA MOBILE for SINGLE- CARRIER 138-GBD DP-QPSK 32TBPS DWDM SYSTEM COVERING 12-THZ C+L BAND China Mobile and Huawei optical transport solution is a commercially-available 80- λ ×400-Gbps single-carrier 138- GBd DP-QPSK system covering 12-THz C+L band. The high-symbol-rate signal generation and reception are achieved by co-packaging InP-based photonics integrated circuit (PIC), transmitter driver, receiver-transimpedance amplifier and coherent ASIC with DSP. In this system, the L6T-band EDFA has a similar performance as that of C6T-band one by the optimisation of doped elements and manufacturing technology. Also, by
adopting 2.4K high-resolution LCoS chip and optimising optics designs, 12-THz integrated C+L WSS is achieved and used in the experimental system, which could double the board integration and reduce power consumption by 30%. Based on this system, a lab experiment of 7000-km transmission over G.654.E fibre is achieved and a field trial of 1673-km transmission over G.652.D fibre is demonstrated with OSNR margin of larger than 6 dB, both of which are purely amplified by EDFAs. Moreover, a record of 6028-km field transmission over G.652.D fibre covering C6T band is also achieved, in which Raman amplification is utilised in partial large-loss spans. This is the longest terrestrial field transmission distance for single-channel 400G techniques. AWARDS FOR MOST INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS – 5 SUB-CATEGORIES Looking across the industry—what new product is driving change in its respective market segment? What’s timely and helping to increase the use of optics? Metrics include design features that are photonics, electronics, thermal, mechanical, chemical, environmental and carbon footprint based.
