THE GOLFER’S LEXICON: Speak the Game

• Tee Box: The designated area where you take your first shot of the hole. It’s marked by two tee markers. • Fairway: The well-maintained, short-grass area between the tee box and the green. This is the ideal place for your ball to land. • Rough: The long grass that borders the fairway. It’s a bit more challenging to hit from here! • Green: The area of the golf course where the grass is specially prepared for putting. This is where the hole is located. • Bunker (or Sand Trap): A depression filled with sand. It’s considered a hazard, and you can’t ground your club in the sand before you hit the ball. • Hazards: Areas on the course like bunkers or water (ponds, streams) that are designed to make play more difficult. • Pitch: A short shot, typically played with a wedge, that goes high into the air and lands softly on the green. • Chip: An even shorter shot, usually played near the green, that stays low to the ground and rolls toward the hole. Full Swing Terms: From “Full Swing: Adding Power & Flow • Address: The position you take standing over the ball just before you begin your swing. • Backswing: The first half of the swing where you take the club back away from the ball and up to the top of your swing. • Downswing: The forward motion of the club, from the top of the backswing down to the point of impact with the ball.

• Impact: The precise moment the clubhead makes contact with the ball. • Follow-Through: The continuation of the swing after the club has struck the ball, finishing in a balanced position. • Tempo: The rhythm and speed of your entire swing, from takeaway to follow-through. • Swing Plane: The imaginary tilted plane on which your club swings during the backswing and downswing. A good swing plane is key to consistency. • Divot: The piece of turf that is cut out of the ground by the club head after you hit the ball. Taking a divot after impact is often a sign of a solid strike. • Slice: A shot that curves sharply from left to right for a right-handed golfer. It’s an unforced error often caused by an open clubface at impact. • Hook: A shot that curves sharply from right to left for a right-handed golfer. It’s often caused by a closed clubface at impact. • Draw: A shot that curves slightly from right to left for a right-handed golfer. This is a controlled and desirable shot shape. • Fade: A shot that curves slightly from left to right for a right-handed golfer. This is also a controlled and desirable shot shape.
