Perseverance
Through the ages, the world has seen us with disdain You look down at us as if we are a subhuman bloodstain Yet we never cower, never fear, For still, we persevere. The words you use cut like knives You strive to destroy our very lives Your cold glares cut into our soul Your aim to forever be in in control You send us out, you send us away We worry for the strike that may come any day Yet, the murky water shall clear For still, we persevere Then, a knock at the door-- death With its fingers cold and ever icy breath Your symbols painted red with our blood Sickles of annihilations out to push us away with a thud Crystal splinters carpet the ground. As you beat my people down The ashes fresh the sky not clear Blackened pages flutter, as you watch us with a sneer Yet, here I stand This message for you You may cut us down, but we won’t go
You may break us, but still, our voices grow Through the dark, our voices you will hear For still, we persevere

Why Giraffe has a Long Neck
Long long ago giraffe did not have a long neck. In fact, Giraffe had a short neck. Giraffe was sad all the time because no one wanted to help her reach the high branches. Giraffe had no friends except Zebra, who was Giraffe’s only friend. Every animal in the safari had their own special thing except for Giraffe. Giraffe was the only animal without a special thing. Zebra had stripes. Lion had a mane. Monkey could swing from tree to tree, but poor giraffe could do nothing. One day in the safari Giraffe was walking and stopped by the bees and asked. “Hello Bees, may I have some honey? I am very hungry.” To Giraffe’s surprise, the bees joyfully replied, “Yes. Yes you may have some honey.” So when Giraffe stuck her head in the hole and tried some honey she beamed, “This is the most delicious thing I have ever had in my whole life.” When Giraffe tried to get out, her head was stuck in the hole. She yelped, “Help help! My head is stuck in the hole! Please help!” But noone came to help. So she stayed there day after day until Lion came. Lion could not get Giraffe out! Lion went to get Zebra. Zebra and Lion both tried to get Giraffe out. It was not working. So they went to go get the Monkeys. Lion, Zebra and the Monkeys pulled and pulled but it did not work. So they tried pulling harder and harder until Giraffes NECK got stretched. They realized that they pulled so hard that they stretched Giraffe’s neck out. So when Giraffe realized they stretched her neck out, she cried “Hooray!” They did not understand why Giraffe was so happy. Giraffe thanked them, “Thank you guys very much!” Zebra asked, “Why are you so happy, Giraffe?” “You guys helped me get out of the bee’s hole and give me this long neck! Now I have a special thing!” So, from that day on Giraffe could reach high branches and had a special thing! So that is why Giraffe has a long neck.

My Bat Mitzva
I have been preparing for this moment for almost six months. I am about to be called up to the bima as a bat mitzvah. First lets rewind a little bit. It’s October 11, 2023, and I’m in my living room practicing Torah for the last time. Tomorrow is my big day. For a moment, doubt starts to creep into my mind. “What if I mess up?” “What if I’m not good enough? Will I embarrass myself?” But then I say to myself “I got this, I have practiced and worked hard. It will all pay off.” I wake up in the morning and run downstairs. It’s finally time!! “Are you excited?” My mom asks over her shoulder while cooking breakfast. “Kinda” I responded, realizing I was more nervous than anything else. “Aww don’t say that, you are gonna do awesome!!” She responds. “Guess what?” “What Mom?” I reply, unenthusiastically. “Your cousins landed late last night and are excited to watch you.” She says with a smile. Although my cousins are cute, I don’t know how well they will sit quietly in a service. Ronan is seven and in my opinion, very mature for his age, but then again he is also seven so meltdowns are frequent. Then there’s Harvey. He’s mainly quiet, but at five years old he has meltdowns. Lastly there’s Talia. She is two with perfect spiral curls except she has, you guessed it, meltdowns. Just another reason to be worried. Earlier in the week, I spoke to Rabbi Katzman and we chose who was going to be honored for each prayer and job. I felt that since my cousins had flown all the way from New York just to watch me, I should honor them. I chose my uncle to carry the Torah and my aunt and cousins to be the ark openers. Looking back on it now, that might not have been the smartest choice as they have meltdowns. Anyway, my Mom made me eggs for breakfast. Eggs are one of my favorites because they are nutritious and delicious. I eat my eggs and then walk into my room to get dressed. The dress I’m wearing is baby blue, made out of soft and silky material. It has short, ruffled sleeves with a skirt made from layers of ruffles. It is really pretty. I throw it on and go into the bathroom to brush my teeth and then brush my hair. It is fairly easy to brush my hair seeing as my mom had blow- dried my hair the previous night. I slip into my sparkly shoes and head back into the kitchen. My brother just finished getting dressed in his white button-down shirt and navy blue pants. My sister comes marching down the stairs in a nice black t- shirt and black and white polka dot skirt, similar to the outfit I wore to her bat mitzvah. We all grab our bags and head into the car. I make sure to bring my practice sheet with me.
On the way to school, we stop at Benny’s Bagels to pick up all the stuff for the brunch. Bagels, cream cheese, coffee and orange juice. All the tables, utensils and plates are clanging around in our trunk. We pull into the parking lot and I feel my palms start to sweat. “This is it,” I think to myself, “remember, be confident and enjoy your moment. You’ve worked hard and now is your time to show it off.” We walk into the building and I help my mom carry the coffee jugs. Inside, the building is mostly empty. It is 7:30 and school doesn’t start until 8:00, so most of the students haven’t arrived yet. We turned the corner to the hallway and set up MPR with all of the things for brunch. Then we head into Beit Aryeh. We take family photos and everyone gets settled in their seats. The students start filing in and sitting in their seats. The rabbi announces that we will start services and tells everyone to be quiet. The first part of the service is a blur. I am basically on autopilot. I do remember stifling a giggle when Talia and Harvey started fighting, but that’s mostly it. While my uncle is carrying the Torah, I take a deep breath. He sets it on the bima and winks at me. I smile back nervously. The rabbi undressed the Torah and lays it back on the bima. The time comes for me to start and I pause, “Where is it?? Where do I start? I can’t find the words! Oh no.” I hear whispers and mumbles throughout the auditorium and I can feel my cheeks turn as pink as a flamingo. I scan the words but I can’t find my portion anywhere. Of all the things that could go wrong, I hadn’t accounted for not being able to find the words as one of them. Just then the rabbi rolls the Torah onto the next page and says “Oops, wrong page!” I sigh in relief. I scan this page and see my portion at the top. I hesitate, but then begin. I go on to read with few mistakes. When I am done, my parents give me a hug. Everyone starts singing and dancing to Siman Tov, the classic celebration song. I get lifted in the chair (and almost fall out), but have a good time. Looking back on it now, I am very proud of myself for pulling it off. There were times when I thought I might only be able to read half the portion. Leading up to it, I was very stressed out, but I think that I couldn’t have performed better. Now, I feel connected to my roots and I am living my life as a young Jewish woman.

The Lessons from the King! “A Lion’s roar is its ultimate weapon, and it uses it sparingly.” - Unknown This quote teaches us a good lesson: don’t always use your gift. We can learn a lot from lions. Perseverance. One big thing we can learn from lions is not giving up. The lions never quit. If they can’t find food or water, they keep going. People should do the same. Even when things are tough, we should keep trying. “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” - Confucious This quote is talking about pushing through, even when things feel challenging. Change can be scary, but it can also lead to good things. For example, lions move to get more food and better homes, even if its hard. Change can feel tough at first, but it is worth it. “Patience is key.” Lions show patience when they hunt. They wait quietly in the grass until its time to attack. RAWR!! Even if they don’t catch their prey, they keep trying. Patience is something we should use everyday. Lions also show us how important teamwork is. They work together to hunt, and they can take down big animals like giraffes, baby elephants, and hippos. Lions teach us that when we use teamwork, we can accomplish more. Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” This shows us that teamwork is key and also that you can accomplish more. In this essay, I hope you’ve learned about perseverance, change, patience, and teamwork. I hope you’ve learned more about lions and the lessons we can learn from them. I encourage you to remember these lessons everyday and carry them with you everywhere. Shira Itskovich, 6 grade th

The Six Scooters
Scratch! As I hopped off the scooter, I could hear the sound of the brakes scratching the asphalt roads. “Woah!” I exclaimed. “That was so close!”
“Right?!” Lexi yelled. “Let’s go again!” After catching our breath, we raced up the steep, pale brown, bumpy driveway, then down again because we forgot our scooters. “I’m tired” I panted.
“Me too.” she responded. “Do you still want to go?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I reassured her, although it was hard to walk. “Hey,” I stated. “What would happen if I used your little sister’s scooter?” “I dunno.” she mumbled. “You can try, the scooters are in the garage.” After figuring out the code for the garage door, I ducked under the opening door and looked around. There were gloves, clothes, stuff that’s been there for 2 years and basketballs. It was like being in a storage closet that hadn’t been emptied for years. The scooters were stuffed in a corner, lined up. A few minutes later, I came out.
“Lexi, why do you have so many scooters?” I questioned. She walked quickly into the garage, wondering what I was talking about.
“Hmmmmm. I never noticed that.” Lexi stated. “Woah, that is a lot. One, two, three, four, five, six. Six scooters!” “Really?” I wondered out loud. “I guess.” she responded. We both burst out laughing. This story is one of my favorite memories. I guess it reminds me of the things Lexi and I used to do before I moved. Akira Schwartz, 4 grade th

With Might
You can break me down to nothing, Tear apart the soul I keep, Throw my dreams into shadows, And make my silence deep. But I won’t stay beneath the ground, I’ll rise from every fall, My spirit’s built on solid soil And I’ll stand tall through it all. I’ll rise back up with might . You may try to shake my essence, Push me down and shake me ‘til I’m weak, But every time you doubt my power, I’ll find the strength to speak. The scars I wear are not my chains, They’re proof of how I fight, Each battle only makes me grow, I’ll shine through the darkest night And rise back up with might. You may call me fragile and broken, Tell me I won’t make it through, But I’ll show you my resilience, And I’ll prove my worth to you. The road may twist, the path may bend, But I will never stray,
I may stumble, I may falter, But I will always find my way,
For even when I face the hardest, I know I’ll live to see the next day. Each challenge will become my fuel, Each fear becomes my fight, No force can hold me down for long, I’ll rise back up with might.
You can try to break me, tear me down with force, But I’ll rise above the strife,
For I’m more than what you see, I’ll keep pushing through this life, Through every trial, every fight, Through every dark disguise, You may try, but you’ll never win I’ll rise back up with might. You may try, but you’ll never win I’ll rise back up with might.

What Can Humans Learn from Bunnies? Did you know that bunnies are roles models for humans? This is for a reason, bunnies are mostly wild animals. They take care of themselves. They need to find a home, food, water and other living necessities. Bunnies are role models because of the way they behave. They are independent so what humans can take in from them is that we need to behave like them and take care of ourselves. For instance, bunnies need a midnight snack in order for them to survive. And there are times we humans need to eat a midnight snack. And to wait to eat until morning NO WAY!!!! They teach us that if our body sends signals that we are hungry then we should eat even if absolutely no one is awake. Bunnies are also extremely calm animals and only decide to be with calm appearances. So, this means that you should be calm around bunnies. And, they will be calm around you. Bunnies show their love to a person by moving closer to them so, if you are being calm and they move closer to you then you can know that they adore being around you. They teach us to be calm and communicate calmly around everyone at anytime. Bunnies however, are like humans needing to release energy. If we are in school for an entire day with absolutely no breaks it is extremely difficult to concentrate. This is the exact same for bunnies. If they arouse and do not explode out energy it is hard to concentrate on their day. If we don’t release energy then we can’t concentrate, and bunnies teach us that is hard to do. So we need to leave a slit of time from our day to release energy. Bunnies have a daily schedule. They wake up, eat, rest and play, and eat more. Schedules are very important for humans to have, especially when many activities are happening. But, there are times we need to relax and take a day off for themselves. And what bunnies teach us is that it is important for us because that will help us stay in order. Bunnies teach us to be well-groomed. This refers to acting mature and responsible. Bunnies are very mature. For instance, if a person were to wake up one day and not brush their hair. That would not be well-groomed because that is not mature. We need to brush our hair and show we care. In conclusion bunnies teach humans numerous things. They are amazing role models to humans and we need to notice that. Sophia Krieger, 6 grade th

Opening my Head! “BANG!” My head smacked into the bleachers. “Ow!!” I stood up too fast before I got out from under the bleachers. I was playing hide and seek and hit my head. “Are you okay?” Coach Steinberg, also the gym teacher, asked. “I don’t think so,” I replied, holding back tears. I felt like my head was going to split open. I could hear the sound of children’s feet hitting the ground as they ran past me, and my stomach felt like it was going to burst. The gym teacher hurried to his office to call my parents and told them what happened. I waited not knowing what happened to me. Then my parents hurried to come and took me to urgent care to get stitches. It was my first time I was pretty scared because it was my first time opening my head. A few weeks later the nurses at urgent care that put on my stitches removed the stitches because my head had finally healed, but it was very painful. They had to pour hot water on the liquid bandage to remove them. I learned a great lesson that day. No matter how badly I want to chew some old gum under the bleachers, I will resist the urge to grab it. Refael Rubinsky, 4 grade th

Shih Tzus by: Hannah Feinberg, 5 grade th Shih Tzus are known for their loyalty, love and cuteness. Do you want a furry little friend that can be your best friend? If so, read along. Fun Facts - Shih Tzus were found in the year 1000 BC and in China’s Western neighborhood of Tibet. Shih Tzus need lots of activities before they go bonkers! They need sleep, walks, toys, friends, and cuddles! Toys are always needed because they need something to bite or chew on. Shih Tzus need at least 1-2 walks a day because they need exercise, you also never know when they need to go to the bathroom! They can get nervous for a thunderstorm or rain so they might need to go potty! Diet - The Shih Tzus diet is fascinating. They should get one cup of food a day. Some food that they cannot eat is chocolate because of caffeine. Caffeine can makes them very sick because caffeine can cause them to die. Avocado can make dogs sick, they can throw up or have a hard time digesting. Grapes and raisins can cause heart problems and can make them die. They don’t always die but there is a 75% chance. Eyesight and Hearing - Their eyesight is very very very good. It’s because when they hear something it usually alerts them to pay attention to their surroundings. The only colors they can see are green, blue and yellow. Now lets talk about their hearing. They can hear anything from thunderstorms to rain, to someone opening a bag of chips. Sleeping - Something Shih Tzus love is sleep! So when they are asleep they like their peace, but sleeping for the night they would love to come and love and snuggle you! Do not put them in a crate because they will be by themselves at bedtime. They can get nervous by themselves when there is rain or a thunderstorm! They feel very comfortable with their owners! They love being surrounded by the people they love. They are comfortable with anyone from babies to kids to adults. I hope you enjoyed learning about Shih Tzus. Now you know how to get one! They are playful and fun to be with. They will love you the second they meet you.

How Lion Became Known as King of the Jungle by: Shoshana Rosson, 3 grade rd Long, long ago lions were not known as the king of all the animals. They were the least respected.
One day, Lion was walking around Savannah. It was scorching hot in the desert and it almost never rained. Lion walked around feeling blue because he was not respected so he never got to have any food and he had no friends. Lion had tried standing up to himself. “Please I am an animal like you so please respect me.” Lion said. “No you are a little stupid and small animal.” snickered the Zebra. “Really? I am small?” roared Lion. He puffed out his chest. “Yes.” said Elephant. “Roar!” Lion said with anger. No matter what Lion did he was always treated like he was gross. He begged for respect and couldn’t get it. Later that day, he even heard Gazelle and Hippo gossiping about him. “He is weird.” they said. Lion was a raging fire but he also felt really sad. He had no clue what he could do to make the animals respect him and maybe even fear him. Then, one day Lion was walking around Savannah and on the ground he found a glass bottle. In the glass bottle there was some sand. Not ordinary sand. The sand looked like pure gold. “This is no ordinary sand,” Lion realized. “I must go show the rest of the animals.” Afterwards, Lion went to the rest of the animals and showed them the sand. The animals just laughed and said, “Thats just the ordinary sand, you fool.” The animals gathered together. Giraffe said “Lion loves his sand so we should steal it from him.” “Great idea” said Hippo. They chased Lion through the desert trying to steal his sand. Lion ran as fast lightning. The buzzing bees tried to sting him as he went. Zap, zap, zap they went. As he ran the sand tickled his toes. The animals chased him so far that the animals could not keep up with him anymore. After that, when Lion was sure he lost them he sat down to rest by a rock and wept. He turned his attention to the sand. He knew something was special about the sand. Still holding the sand, Lion said, “If only they would respect and fear me.” All of a sudden, the sand started to glow. Smash went the sand as he dropped it in surprise. He ran
back to the animals and was flabbergasted by what he saw. All the animals were bowing down to him. He was astonished when the animals said, “Welcome King of the Jungle.” Lion was beaming from ear to ear because he knew that the magic of the sand had worked. He had made a wish using the magic sand. That’s how Lion became King of the Jungle.

Skylanders
INTRODUCTION When it comes to video games, we all think that it would be cool if we could zap toys and figures into the game. But what if you could? With Skylanders, you can! Skylanders are figurines with built-in microchips that when placed on a sensor, appear in the game as if by magic. Here are the facts, tricks and info on this amazing game. GAMES Skylanders has made many games over the years. The first of which was Spyro’s Adventure, a 3-D puzzle game based around the Skylanders mascot Spyro the Dragon. Which according to Skywiki.com was released in 2011. After years of using toys, the creators of Skylanders decided to try something new. In 2016 Skylanders BattleCast was released. In the game instead of using toys, you used cards. It was a smart idea due to the fact that it was cheaper to manufacture cards. Skylander games are challenging yet engaging and worth a try.
TIPS AND TRICKS Skylanders can be tricky but it is much easier if you know how. Going off course is a good way to find secrets and treasure. Because sometimes if you are supposed to go one way look around before proceeding. Also, it is important to switch Skylanders often so that you will have all of them on a high level so no matter which you use, they wont die easily. Skylanders are fun but even more so if you know how and what to do if you get stuck. EVOLUTION Skylanders has come a long way. Here are some facts about its journey. Skylanders first started in 2011 and immediately took off. Everybody loved the idea of collecting and gaming with figures so Skylanders were off to a good start. Skylanders released new figures with every new game so there was always more to collect. Sadly in 2022 Skylanders was discontinued due to the fact they could not keep up with toy manufacturing costs. But you can still find the games on eBay, Amazon and Facebook marketplace so if you want to play, you still can. TOYS One of the most amazing parts of Skylanders is their large variety of interactive toys. Here are the first, rarest and most exclusive of these figures. The first figure produced was Spyro the Dragon made for their first game Spyro’s Adventure. In order to make more money Skylanders collaborated with Frito Lay to create Fire Bone Hot Dog. The rarest of all figurines made is an Employee prism break only given to those who worked on the game. CONCLUSION Skylanders is an amazing game with amazing features, and just fun so if I were you, I would check it out.
