The Kilkenny firm collaborated with Pipelife Ireland and other volunteers to provide plumbing and heating services including materials, technical support and labour during the renovaton. From April 29 to May 8, the team of volunteers helped complete a dream home for the O’Hanlon family comprising the parents and three children. The family had embarked on a self-build to create a home meeting the special needs of their daughter Aoibhínn, 9, who was born with a severe type of spina bifida and hydrocephalus. After many years struggling to secure the money to build the home, progress had been painfully slow with DIY SOS stepping in to complete the project. Both Hickey Plumbing Contractors and Pipelife Ireland have expressed their delight and pride to have supported the project. The TV show, which airs on RTÉ One, brings together communities, tradespeople and suppliers to deliver life-changing renovations for families in need. www.hickeyplumbingcontractors.com

CO TYRONE FIRM AWARDED £4.6M FUNDING TO PRODUCE HEAT PUMP PARTS

Cookstown-based manufacturer Copeland is set to create 60 jobs after receiving £4.6m in UK government funding to boost production of heat pump compressors. The subsidiary of a US-headquartered provider of sustainable climate solutions has been awarded £4.614m under the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero’s Heat Pump Investment Accelerator Competition. Copeland, which invested £19m in its Cookstown site last year to ramp up production capacity in response to rising demand for heat pumps across Europe, will make a further multi-million- pound investment to expand production by 240,000 compressors.

Adding new production lines and laboratory testing facilities, the investment will also support infrastructure and equipment costs. Speaking in Westminster, Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said, “Following a record-breaking month for applications to our Boiler Upgrade Scheme, we are now proposing to give working families more choice and flexibility to pick the low-carbon upgrades that work best for them. “We are investing over £4m in Copeland to continue building a homegrown heat pump industry and training up the army of skilled workers we need to achieve this.” www.copeland.com

HYBRID HEATING SYSTEMS

PHOENIX ENERGY’S ENERGY TRANSITION MANAGER IAIN HOY OUTLINES HYBRID HEATING SYSTEMS’ POTENTIAL TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS, HIGHLIGHTING SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATIONS IN NORTHERN IRELAND… Fuelling the future: The role of hybrid heating in NI’s energy transition

As Northern Ireland intensifies its efforts to meet its 2050 net zero target, decarbonising heat remains a pressing challenge. However, progress thus far has been mixed. Residential buildings account for c.2.5 million tonnes of NI’s carbon emissions and no one heating technology – renewable gas, biomass, heat pumps, HVO, heat networks – can be expected to deliver this level of reduction on its own in such a short timeframe. NI Gas Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), including Phoenix Energy, continue to grow their customer base by connecting c.10,000 of the remaining c.210,000 properties per year which continue to use oil-fired central heating but have a gas network outside their property. Connecting these homes and incorporating energy efficiency measures

would unlock up to 425,000 tonnes of CO2e savings. However, we need to embrace emerging opportunities if we are to meet the gas industry’s target of a net-zero gas network by 2050. This will include replacing natural gas with renewable alternatives such as biomethane and reducing overall gas use by encouraging the utilisation of hybrid heating systems. Biomethane is a like-for-like, non- disruptive replacement for natural gas. Northern Ireland, thanks to our large agricultural sector, has the potential to produce more biomethane than we currently consume on the distribution network, which is why Phoenix is working with industry, academia and policy makers to establish a high-performing biomethane economy locally. But it’s important that in addition to embracing renewable gas solutions,

consumers also utilise energy as efficiently as possible during the net-zero transition. The old adage that the lowest- cost and lowest-carbon unit of energy is the one not used still rings true. That’s why Phoenix has taken forward several trials of hybrid heating systems which promise to provide consumers with the best of both worlds – combining the efficiency of a heat pump with the reliability and peak-heating capabilities of a renewable gas boiler in a single net- zero-ready consumer package. WHAT IS A HYBRID HEATING SYSTEM? A hybrid system comprises a gas boiler and a heat pump joined together via a smart control unit. The heat pump, when external temperatures and household conditions are favourable, is enabled to run at very high efficiencies with the

and 50p cheaper to run per day than an average standalone heat pump.

3. NI energy system benefits: If every home in NI installed a 6kW heat pump, this would duplicate NI’s existing peak electrical demand and pose significant challenges for NI’s electricity distribution network. As hybrids can switch to the gas boiler during periods of peak demand, they lessen the impact on the electricity system. Overall, and confirmed by the results of our own trials, hybrid heating systems offer a realistic and consumer-friendly path to reducing residential carbon emissions in Northern Ireland.

gas boiler standing ready to step in at points when the heat pump is not able to operate efficiently and/or cost effectively. The gas boiler element also usually meets the home’s hot water demand, avoiding the need to install a hot water storage tank.

Space saving: No additional space within the home was required as the hybrid’s combi boiler provided hot water without the need for a hot water tank. LOOKING AHEAD As Northern Ireland transitions toward a low-carbon energy system, Phoenix is confident that hybrid heating systems, in conjunction with a renewable gas network, will play a significant role in the decarbonisation of home heating. Our current trials are just the beginning, and the NI Gas DNOs are working together to take forward a large 100 home hybrid heating trial next year. While existing skills across the gas sector will be well placed to support the growth of the hybrid heating market, there will be a need for companies to embrace renewable accreditations to be actively involved in hybrid installations. We look forward to working with industry partners in the coming months to keep you updated on the status of trial activity and projects in this area. If you would like to hear more about our plans, please visit www.phoenixenergyni. com/fuelling-the-future

Hybrid systems offer several significant advantages:

1. Lower running costs for the consumer: As electricity and gas tariff prices can be programmed into the hybrid controller unit, the system can react to changing energy prices by automatically varying the split between each unit to provide the most cost- effective heating mix for the homeowner. 2. Reduced disruption for the consumer: Hybrids can utilise a home’s existing heating system without the requirement to upgrade radiators or install hot water tanks. This is crucial as over 80% of gas connected homes in NI feature combi boilers and there is often no space available to incorporate a hot water tank. Hybrids are also particularly suitable for distress purchase situations where the boiler breaks down and needs immediate replacement.

HYBRID SYSTEM TRIAL RESULTS

Phoenix Energy has invested in several hybrid heating trials across the Greater Belfast area. Our longest-running trial reporting the following results throughout 2024: Carbon savings: The hybrid significantly reduced the home’s carbon emissions, releasing 60% less carbon than an oil heating system and 49% less carbon emissions than a gas boiler-only system. Cost savings: Throughout 2024, the hybrid proved to be 30p cheaper to run per day than a traditional gas boiler

The Grundfos GO app plays a crucial role in this simplicity. By scanning the old pump, the app provides the correct replacement model and settings, ensuring

a seamless transition. This not only saves time but also minimises the risk of errors, leading to a first-time fix in most cases.

MANUFACTURER - DAB PUMPS LIMITED

ADAM FERNEYHOUGH, COUNTRY DIRECTOR UK AT DAB PUMPS, EXPLAINS WHY EASE OF INSTALLATION AND HASSLE-FREE MAINTENANCE ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PUMP POWER…

Fast fit, no fuss with DAB Pumps

For installers tackling basements, extensions or garden office projects, wastewater disposal can quickly become a sticking point. With the push for faster installs and minimal disruption, product selection isn’t just about performance. Whether it’s a toilet in a garden room, a basement utility space or a shower in a loft conversion, automatic lifting stations make it possible to add sanitary ware where traditional plumbing can’t. These compact, sealed units pump greywater or blackwater to the nearest suitable discharge point, bypassing the need for complex pipe rerouting or disruptive groundworks. That makes them an attractive option for developers and installers delivering flexible, functional spaces, particularly when working within the limits of an existing structure. But not all lifting stations are created equal. For time-pressed installers working in occupied homes or under pressure on site, products that are difficult to install, overly complex to specify or awkward to maintain can waste valuable hours. Fast-fit features, like intuitive assembly, plug-and- play connections and in-situ servicing, can be the difference between a smooth job and a return visit. Installers want products that just get the job done and a good lifting station needs

to be reliable, of course, but it should also be quick to install and easy to work on later if something goes wrong. That’s especially important in retrofits, where you don’t want to disturb the wider system. Overcomplicated product ranges can be another pain point. Too many similar options increase the risk of selecting the wrong unit, especially when the differences between models aren’t immediately clear. DAB’s Genix range tackles this head- on. With just three SKUs, it covers most domestic and light commercial needs: Genix and Genix WL for toilets, washbasins and showers and Genix VT for greywater- only applications such as washing machines and kitchen sinks. Each model is supplied as a complete kit, including all essential installation components - hose clamps, adaptors, rotating delivery pipes, ground fixing screws, integrated non-return valves and quick couplings. A step-by-step, quick-start guide with clear diagrams helps installers get the job done without fuss, even in tight spaces. Maintenance has been given similar attention. Many lifting stations require full disassembly to access internal components - a messy, time-consuming job that risks

pipework damage and unnecessary downtime. The Genix design allows the motor block to be removed in situ, without disturbing the pipes. Capacitors, pressure switches and even the cutting blades can be accessed easily, making servicing cleaner and quicker. As lifting stations become a more common feature in homes and refurbishments, demand is growing for units that fit seamlessly into the fast-paced reality of today’s plumbing projects. With clear product options, thoughtful installation kits and designs that prioritise user access, new-generation lifting stations such as Genix are helping installers keep jobs on schedule and customers reassured

their plumbing is built to last. For more information, visit www.dabpumps.com

MANUFACTURER - SFA SANIFLO

Two Sanifos 1600 underground pump stations have been supplied to Uisce Éireann as part of its €25m investment to modernise and upgrade its wastewater treatment plant in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan. Benefitting homes and businesses in the town, the upgrade ensures all wastewater is treated appropriately and will serve a population equivalent of 5,200. Two merchants individually commissioned the pump stations from SFA Saniflo Ireland including Veolia, Ireland’s leading supplier of ultra-pure water solutions and technologies. Veolia specified the Sanifos 1600 after undergoing a vigorous vetting process with Saniflo to ensure its stations were of high quality. The Sanifos 1600 underground sewage lifting station is available with different configurations, which can be selected by engineers or via Saniflo’s own advisory service. Both merchants selected the Sanifos 1600 2 D GR ZFS71.1S, a cast-iron grinder pump with pre-installed accessories including valves and pipework. By improving the town’s wastewater capacity, the plant upgrade will allow for current and future population growth and support its social and economic development. It will also enhance water quality and the integrity of receiving waters, benefitting fishing and other water sports. The works will ensure the treatment of wastewater is fully compliant with EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives and Wastewater Discharge Licence Emission Limit Values and will eliminate all non-compliant combined sewer overflows from the treatment plant. OFTEC NEWS

IMMEDIATE INTRODUCTION OF A 20% RENEWABLE LIQUID FUEL BLEND IS REQUIRED IF IRELAND IS TO MEET ITS CARBON REDUCTION TARGETS, SAYS OFTEC IRELAND MANAGER DAVID BLEVINGS… Low-carbon liquid fuels offer a readily available solution for off-grid homes

The Environmental Protection Agency published its report on carbon emissions and targets during May 2025, and it made grim reading for the Government. Ireland’s 2030 target under the EU’s Effort Sharing Regulation is to deliver a 42% reduction in emissions compared to 2005 levels by 2030. The latest EPA projections show that currently implemented policies and measures (WEM) will achieve a reduction of 9.5% on 2005 levels by 2030, significantly short of the 42% reduction target. Locally, the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021 provides for the establishment of carbon budgets

to support achieving Ireland’s climate ambition. Two carbon budgets have been set for the period 2021 to 2030, with a provisional budget proposed for 2031- 2035: • Budget 1 : 2021-2025, 295Mt CO2eq • Budget 2: 2026-2030, 200Mt CO2eq • Budget 3: 2031-2035 (provisional), 151Mt CO2eq For Budget period 1, the latest EPA projections show that this is projected to be exceeded by 12Mt CO2eq in the WEM scenario and 8Mt CO2eq in the WAM scenario. Using the projections presented for the period of Budget 1 from 2021-2025, Budget 2 from 2026-2030 would decrease by 12Mt CO2eq in the WEM

L-R: David Blevings (OFTEC), Nick Hayes (UKIFDA) and Kevin McPartlan (FFI).

“A 20% blend would cut oil-heating emissions by 0.5Mt CO₂eq annually - reversing the projected increase.”
