HIGHLIGHTING AN URGENT NEED FOR HVAC PROFESSIONALS TO INTEGRATE ENERGY-EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGIES, PURMO GROUP SALES DIRECTOR FOR IRELAND JOHN KELLY OUTLINES OPTIONS… Decarbonising commercial buildings with energy-efficient heating solutions
Policies such as the Heat and Buildings Strategy, which promotes low-carbon heating solutions, and the tightening of Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards mean that, by 2028, commercial properties must achieve an Energy Performance Certificate rating of at least C to remain eligible for rental. This creates an urgent need for HVAC professionals to integrate energy- efficient technologies that align with decarbonisation goals. • Modern panel radiators can operate efficiently at flow temperatures as low as 45°C and are a future-proof investment for buildings transitioning to low- temperature heating. They work well with low-temperature boilers, as well as solar thermal, biomass and heat pump systems. The variety of sizes and configurations
actively circulating warm air, improving heat transfer efficiency and reducing warm-up times. The Myson Ulow-E2 radiator operates effectively at flow temperatures of 35-45°C, making it ideal for integration with low-carbon heating systems driven by a heat pump. Because they distribute heat so efficiently at reduced system temperatures, fan-assisted radiators require less energy to maintain comfortable conditions. • Fan convectors are a great match for heat pumps and district heating systems. Able to maintain high heat output at low system temperatures (down to 35°C) thanks to built-in fans that accelerate heat distribution, they are ideal where quick heating is required, eg offices, schools and healthcare facilities. The Myson iVector S2 combines low water content with a specially designed axial fan, which allows the emitter to respond quickly to fluctuations in room temperature. When combined with a reversible heat pump or a separate cooling source, the iVector S2 offers both heating and cooling functions for a perfect indoor climate at all times. A variety of installation options, such as freestanding, wall-mounted, ceiling
mounted or even recessed, offer flexibility in commercial interiors. • With programmable thermostats and WiFi connectivity, facility managers can easily optimise heating schedules. Electric radiators are fully compatible with renewable energy sources, allowing a significant reduction in operational costs, better energy management and zero reliance on fossil fuels. Because they don’t require any pipework, electric radiators are a cost-effective retrofit option for older buildings. Best practice to enhance system efficiency and support decarbonisation efforts: • Improved insulation: Reducing heat loss lowers overall heating demand and improves efficiency of the system. • Proper system sizing and zoning: Avoiding oversized systems and using zoning techniques can prevent unnecessary energy use. • Smart controls and automation: Building management systems can optimise heating schedules based on occupancy and external temperatures, while TRVs or smart electronic controls allow independent temperature regulation in different areas. available allows optimal use of commercial floor space, which is
particularly beneficial in offices, schools and retail environments. Double and triple-panel radiators provide greater heat output in a compact design and are a perfect solution for larger or poorly- insulated areas. • Fan-assisted radiators combine the principle of traditional radiators with built- in fans that enhance heat distribution by
