CO TYRONE FIRM AWARDED £4.6M FUNDING TO PRODUCE HEAT PUMP PARTS
Cookstown-based manufacturer Copeland is set to create 60 jobs after receiving £4.6m in UK government funding to boost production of heat pump compressors. The subsidiary of a US-headquartered provider of sustainable climate solutions has been awarded £4.614m under the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero’s Heat Pump Investment Accelerator Competition. Copeland, which invested £19m in its Cookstown site last year to ramp up production capacity in response to rising demand for heat pumps across Europe, will make a further multi-million- pound investment to expand production by 240,000 compressors.
Adding new production lines and laboratory testing facilities, the investment will also support infrastructure and equipment costs. Speaking in Westminster, Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said, “Following a record-breaking month for applications to our Boiler Upgrade Scheme, we are now proposing to give working families more choice and flexibility to pick the low-carbon upgrades that work best for them. “We are investing over £4m in Copeland to continue building a homegrown heat pump industry and training up the army of skilled workers we need to achieve this.” www.copeland.com
to senior director for water. The appointments follow the
retirement of Anne-Marie Conibear, director for energy and sustainable cities in Ireland. This presented an opportunity to reconfigure the leadership team for the coming years which will see exceptional levels of investment in water and wastewater infrastructure in both countries. Part of the French-headquartered Egis Group, the company is a market leader in water systems and infrastructure in Ireland and the UK and is involved in major projects and plant upgrades such as the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment upgrade in Dublin and the upgrade of the Lee Road Water Treatment Plant in Cork. Egis’ expertise in water engineering was strengthened by its 2023 acquisition of JB Barry & Partners, an engineering firm. www.egis-group.com
HSENI LAUNCHES LEGIONELLA BACTERIA INSPECTION CAMPAIGN
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) has announced the launch of an inspection campaign focusing on the management of Legionella bacteria in hot and cold-water systems across public sector employers. During the year-long campaign, which is supported by the Public Health Authority (PHA), inspectors from HSENI’s Public Sector team will visit employers that provide facilities for vulnerable people and the general public, including health care, education and public buildings such as leisure centres. The inspection
visits, scheduled to last until March 2026, are part of HSENI’s wider occupational health campaign aimed at raising awareness of workplace ill health conditions, the impact they can have, and the need for appropriate controls. The campaign, which is being supported by the PHA, will also provide an opportunity for HSENI to offer advice across all industry sectors. Where significant risks are found during inspections, enforcement action may be taken to ensure that the risks are properly managed. www.hseni.gov.uk/legionella
