This week things have definitely started to feel very festive at Waldegrave. Following a wonderful Carol Concert at St Augustine’s Church last Friday, the Christmas cheer is definitely spreading. Cucina did a wonderful Christmas lunch in the canteen and it was lovely to see students enjoying a traditional lunch, pulling crackers and singing along to all the Christmas music.

Yesterday’s Christmas Jumper Day brought much joy to school and raised vital funds for Save the Children. You can still donate here. This afternoon we are ending the week with a performance by the Globe Players of A Christmas Carol for Year 10 students. We have much to look forward to next week with our Winter Festival on Monday evening and our school pantomime on Thursday before we finish at 12.30pm. On Monday our Year 12 Psychology students attended the Psychology in Action Conference at the Emmanuel Centre in Victoria. On Wednesday some of Year 9 students led a French workshop at St James’ Primary School, using their excellent language skills to retell the story of The Hungry caterpillar to Year 2 pupils. I would like to congratulate our fantastic cricketers, both our U13 and our U15 teams won the Borough Indoor Cricket tournament and have qualified to progress through to the regional competition in the new year. Next week we will be publishing the latest edition of the Waldegrave Magazine so there will be no bulletin next week. I hope that everyone has a wonderful festive break and we look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday 8 January.

This is the time of year parents and carers may be buying devices that access the internet for their children and so we are sharing a very helpful resource from the Kingston and Richmond Safeguarding Partnership. Setting up parental controls before giving the devices to children saves lots of time and potential conflict later. The QR codes on the attached resource will take you to clear instructions for setting controls on each type of device. Additionally, as during holidays young people may have fewer demands on their time and therefore be allowed more screen time, we have also attached a parent checklist from Childnet that includes lots of sources of advice and guidance for young people and their parents around online safety and digital wellbeing.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9
We are now about to enter into our final week of the term before the Christmas holidays, however, there are still lots of festive events happening in school before we officially break up. This week our annual Christmas Jumper Day was a huge success and student’s very much enjoyed getting into the festive spirit. The purpose of this event was to raise money for Save The Children, if you would like to support our fundraiser please click here to donate. Year 9 French students enjoyed a morning at St James’ Primary School participating in a French Storytelling Leadership Workshop with Year 2 pupils, telling Eric Carle’s renowned tale of the The Very Hungry Caterpillar in French (La chenille qui fait des trous…). The morning was spent with the Waldegrave students applying their leadership skills confidently and fine-honing their presentation skills, teaching Year 2 pupils new vocabulary around eating and food. The event was conducted in French with tasks ranging from retelling the delightful story to the primary school pupils, to leading speaking, writing and drawing activities related to the book. It was a full morning at the school, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. We also had our celebration assembly on Thursday. Subject, tutor time and inclusion prizes were given out to celebrate those students who had really gone above and beyond in their academic studies and had really tried their best this academic year. Awards were given to students who had been a great support to their fellow classmates, really empowering them to do well and offering encouragement. Congratulations to all students who were mentioned in this week’s assembly. Congratulations to 9EJO for being top of the epraise leaderboard for this week. They are followed by 9SPI and then 9FBH in third place. Coming up we have our Winter Festival on Monday 18 December. Our students have worked really hard to put on a wonderful show. If you haven’t already, buy your tickets now by clicking here. A reminder as well that we also close early on Thursday 21 December which will be our final day of term. School will finish at 12:30pm. Please remind your children to ensure that they have cleared out their lockers and taken PE kits and school lunch boxes home. I hope that you all have a very restful and enjoyable Christmas holiday and we look forward to welcoming your children back in January for a fresh new term.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
The Tattooist of Auschwitz - Heather Morris “I tattooed her number on her left hand, and she tattooed her number in my heart,” The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a true story which follows a Slovakian Jew who was imprisoned in the concentration camp Auschwitz in 1942 and fell in love with a girl whose number he tattooed. It’s a true story which follows themes of love, survival and hope as an unforgettable love story unfolds in the midst of an atrocity. I found it to be an extremely emotive, thought provoking and inspiring story which stays with you long after you turn the last page. It’s a very gripping and deeply disturbing novel which encapsulates the horrors of the holocaust and simultaneously sheds a light of comfort and hope; even in the darkest most tragic times, love and hope prevails. ~ Recommended by Marina M-B, Year 11 student
ML/EAL CELEBRATIONS On Wednesday, a group of 22 students from the KS3 Poetry club and the Multilingual/EAL clubs had a lovely end-of-term celebration together with their tutors, Ms Lee and Ms Milon, and the Multilingual/EAL Coordinator. Mrs Hetherington, Head of English, handed the students the certificates awarded for their commitment and achievements. She congratulated them for their hard work and the progress they have made.
It was great and inspiring to see such a diverse yet close-knit group of speakers of other languages gathered to celebrate their success. They all enjoyed this warm and welcoming space where, during their weekly sessions, they support each other to consolidate their proficiency in English skills; this is also the place where their creativity and self- expression are encouraged through poetry. - Ms Milon.
