CREATION AND PROPHECY

O ne of the greatest barriers to an individual’s acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ is skepticism. This was true in the days of the apostles even as it is pertinent today. In II Peter 3:4 we read what the scoffers and mockers had to say, “Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things con tinue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” Peter’s forceful an swer follows three great lines of truth: God’s creation, the flood, and the com ing judgment. This is his declaration, “For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water” (verse 5). The Bible gives us the accurate ac count of the start of the world’s his tory: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The chap ters which follow in Genesis fill in the details for us. Throughout the entire Old Testament testimony is given to the origin of the world of which we are a part. Foolish men have rejected the testimony of the Scriptures. There are many schools of thought as to how the world and all that is in it came into being. There are those who maintain that it never actually came into being, hut rather, that it always was. This, of course, makes matter eternal. Others fancy that by a chance arrangement of the various atoms and molecules things began to develop. They reason that there may have been some instantaneous explo sion and as things began to cool, the world, through a long evolutionary process, emerged and eventually be came what we know it today. There are many concepts of man concerning the creation or existence of the world. Since man rejects the Word of God he counters with some answer of his own. The Bible, however, is explicit in its teaching about creation. The world

came into being by God’s very word; He spoke and it was done. The Apostle John is very definite about this when he says, “All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made.” But the Bible doesn’t say man should accept the Word of God by blind faith. We are reminded to look at nature and observe what is evident in the light of the Word. In this way we see that there are no contradictions. Without dispufe there is design, law and organization in the universe. The only explanation is God. He is only One who could have done this. The Apostle Peter deals with the cre ation as he refers to the historical facts of the flood. He reminds these scof fers, “Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, per ished” (verse 6). There are unmistak able evidences from science which give testimony that there was a flood on the earth. In every lore of people around the world there is a story of a flood which once covered the earth. Geology bears new testimony to this fact al most daily. But it is to be understood that since man will not read and be lieve God’s vindicated truth, he will then turn to almost anything else. But upon ungodly men there is certain judgment coming. The next statement tells us, “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men” (verse 7). In this age of atomic and nuclear warfare, when we wonder as to wheth er or not man is going to destroy the world in which we live, this portion of Scripture teaches that man is not going to do it at all. Man has ruined and “botched” everything else he has ever tried. God is going to see that the earth is reserved not for destruction by man but for His own righteous and (continued on next page) 17
