some very fine passages which are often overlooked. These tell about the responsibility of those who have the Word ministered unto them as to what they are to do in ready response. In Galatians 6:6 we read, “Let him that is taught in the Word communicate (share) unto him that teacheth in all good things.” Hebrews 13:16, “But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” The people who have been taught the Word need to realize their responsibility to undergird the minister financially as well as with their prayers. Q . Tucson, Arizona — “In Judges 11:39, what is meant by Jephthah offering his daughter for a burnt offering?” A. The Lord had sent enemies to quicken Israel back to the faith. The children of Ammon made war against the Jews and Jephthah went out against them. He knew the odds were tre mendously on the side of the invading forces and he vowed to the Lord, “If you will deliver the enemy into my hand, then whoever I first meet when I return shall be the Lord’s and I will make it a burnt offering.” The Lord gave victory but Jephthah was sur prised to find that his own daughter was the first one he met.. When she learned what had happened she urged him to fulfill His promise and that she would maintain a state of virginity. There are orthodox scholars who are on both sides of this question. Some think Jephthah, living in an apostate age, actually sacrificed his daughter as he had promised. (Notice please that his vow was not motivated by the Lord’s leading nor does the Scripture say that it was pleasing to the Lord.) It seems more understandable, how ever, that Jephthah offered her in the sense of having her lead a separated life which was practically a living death. For one in Israel not to be mar ried and not to raise a family was a great grief and heart break. The daugh ter was willing to give up that oppor- (continued on next page) 21

The only way of salvation is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. “He that believeth on the Son hath life; but he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.” The last generation will be made up of those who will have heard the Gospel many times. Many of these will go into the tribulation period. This is recorded in Revelation 6 and 7. There may be those who are saved during the tribulation period but they will pay for their salvation with their lives. This does not have anything to do with a “second chance” after death. These are known as tribulation saints who have been slain for the testi mony of Christ. Q . Portland, Oregon — “Why do minis ters of the Gospel put a price on their services? I don’t see anything in the New Testament to justify this.” A. Most ministers do not do this. Nat urally, they must be supported for their full time ministry in the church, how ever, this is a matter to be decided by the church itself. Sometimes those who are in a Bible conference ministry, who do not have a specific steady income, establish certain costs which are neces sary to be met if they are to be able to carry on for Christ. A church, plan ning a special series of meetings, will rightly seek to know what the Bible teacher or evangelist will need in-order to make his coming possible. In the New Testament we do not have any thing to justify putting a price on serv ices. On the other hand, we do have
