THE PIGEON'S BLOOD RUBY A poor farmer in Nebraska one clay made a trip to Chicago stopping to see a jeweler. Out of his faded overalls he produced a rough red stone and asked what it would cast to have it properly shined. History was made in that mo ment for the stone was found to be worth more than $150,000. It turned out to be a flawless ruby, probably the largest in all the world; it was nearly 24 carats. The story began to unfold as the farmer told how his father had picked it up many years before while living in Hungary. He thought it was such a pretty “pebble” that he had giv en it to his children as a plaything. Down through the years two genera tions of babies had cut their teeth on it. A large rat, according to the farmer, one time had taken it down its hole and it was discovered again only by accident. A stone positively beyond de scription known as the “pigeon’s blood ruby.” Here the poor family had exist ed in virtual poverty, toiling with back breaking labor, when a fortune was within easy reach and treated as noth ing more than a toy. Interesting, isn’t it? Yet, think of the many people who today have the right and ability to possess all the promised treasures in Christ, and yet they continue to live in spiritual poverty and blindness to the Scriptural truth. For the believer, how wonderful to have the assurance of eternal life and to be able to say, “0 the depth of the riches both of the wis dom and knowledge of God! how un searchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” (Romans 11: 33j. * * * If you're not as close to God as you once were, you needn't guess who it was that moved. * * * Our civilization cannot survive material ly, unless it is redeemed spiritually. * * * The one thing worse «than being a quit ter is being afraid to even begin. * * * A truly great person is always a grate ful person. 24
