FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
A s you flip through this 2024-2025 issue of The Flame, I want you to see the glow and fervency on the faces of our students. There is such a palpable sense of pride and exuberance when you see our students in action—in the classrooms, on the athletic fields, and out in the community sharing their hearts and hands. What generates this special community? It is the daily dedication of our teachers, the way our parents feel for our school’s mission, and certainly the amazing learning and growth our students exhibit so frequently throughout the year. The pages of this issue make it clear: The school’s trajectory remains bold and on a constant journey for a better tomorrow. We are planning for the launch of our upcoming Growing our Future Capital Campaign to boost enrollment and expand our buildings and programs. At the same time, Levine Academy can be proud of its core Jewish spirit—along with our foundational traditions—that animate our school continuously and vibrantly. There is so much to celebrate: our Early Childhood teachers are giving our youngest students a brilliant and cheerful start to their learning; our K8 program is taking on the brightest educational programming anywhere; our unique strengths in academic competitions and community service awards are putting Levine on the national map. And if you have not yet experienced up front our emerging theater program or our high–spirited athletic teams, please know that the amazement of Levine continues all the way through eighth grade-and then consider our high school placements! The positive forces of the Levine experience give our students a leg-up as they sail through high school. Our chief gratitude for our school’s success centers on you, our community—you are our advocates, our cheerleaders, our supporters, and the linchpin keeping our community vibrant and growing.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
L evine has been a meaningful part of my life for over 40 years. I’m a proud alumna, having attended from preschool through 8th grade, and today, I’m deeply grateful to give that same foundation to our three children. My parents understood the power of a Levine education—one rooted in Jewish identity, tradition, values, and a deep love for Israel. They gave us the gift of community, lifelong friendships, and mentors, alongside an outstanding secular education that emphasized critical thinking and curiosity. I see those same hallmarks in the Levine of today—an institution that continues to evolve and grow while remaining anchored in its core mission. Now, as my family begins to navigate the world beyond Levine, I appreciate more than ever how rare and special this community truly is. What we have here is not the norm—it’s what I like to call our “secret sauce.” It’s intangible, but you feel it when you walk through the doors. We’re at a pivotal moment in Levine’s history. With a bold new Strategic Plan and the preparation to launch one of our most forward-thinking capital campaigns to date, your role as a supporter has never been more vital. Every hour you give—through meetings, committee work, or offering your expertise— builds a stronger school for today’s students and future generations.
JULIE WILKOFSKY ‘93 PRESIDENT, BOARD OF TRUSTEES

I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to this school community that has given so much to my family and me.” Andrea Steiger is the mother of three Levine students and the incoming board president, beginning her new role in the 2025-2026 school year.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & CONFERENCES Early Childhood Education: Nurturing Growth
NICOLE SOLMAN ROSENBAUM EARLY CHILDHOOD DIRECTOR
Through Innovation and Intentionality T his year, our Early Childhood program continued to elevate the learning experience by deepening its commitment to intentional teaching, play- based discovery, and whole-child development. With a strong focus on aligning daily classroom practices to developmental benchmarks, the team enhanced the way learning is planned, observed, and documented. New tools and strategies empowered teachers to create more meaningful and responsive curriculum experiences—cultivating curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking from the earliest years. One of the most impactful areas of growth was in professional development. Teachers participated in targeted training centered on best practices in early childhood education, with an emphasis on reflective teaching, collaboration, and project-based learning. These ongoing learning
opportunities helped strengthen
a shared pedagogical vision and supported the implementation of innovative approaches in the classroom. The learning environment itself also saw thoughtful enhancements. Classrooms and outdoor spaces were adapted to better support sensory exploration, movement, and child-led inquiry. Integration with Judaics, Hebrew, science, and the arts remained a vital part of each child’s experience, providing a rich, interdisciplinary foundation for growth. As the Early Childhood team looks ahead, the focus remains on deepening documentation practices, expanding student voice through emergent curriculum, and continuing to invest in the professional growth of the educators who bring this vision to life every day.
BUILDING FORWARD: Strengthening Curriculum and Instruction
across genres, and research skills—supporting cross-disciplinary collaboration with Social Studies. STEM education continued to thrive with expanded robotics and coding in the Lower School, capstone and sustainability projects in Middle School, and the pilot of a rigorous new math curriculum in fifth grade—set to expand schoolwide. Instructional technology also progressed with faculty training
T his year, Levine Academy advanced key initiatives across curriculum, STEM, and professional development to enrich student learning and strengthen instructional alignment. The adoption of the Savvas Social Studies curriculum in grades lower and middle school brought greater vertical alignment, inquiry-based learning, and integration of civics, history, and geography. In grades five to eight, the Savvas ELA program emphasized literary analysis, writing K8 General Studies 1,112 hours Hebrew & Judaic Studies 500 hours STEM Team 481 hours EC 1,020 hours PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
in AI, the use of Google Classroom, and increased digital literacy efforts. Faculty engaged in targeted professional development, a summer book study on belonging, and mentorship programs for new teachers—ensuring excellence in teaching across all grades.

A t Ann & Nate Levine Academy, the heart of Jewish learning is beating stronger than ever. In recent years, our Hebrew and Judaic Studies program has entered a dynamic phase of growth, innovation, and alignment, driven by a strategic vision and inspired by our commitment to excellence. As part of our ongoing work with the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) and our schoolwide strategic plan, we’ve embraced key recommendations to create a more cohesive and vertically aligned educational experience— from Early Childhood through eighth grade. This transformation has included a complete revamp of the Lower School Judaic Studies curriculum, with Middle School enhancements already in motion for the upcoming year. One of the most impactful shifts has been moving away from the dual-curriculum model in the Lower School. This change has enabled us to dedicate specialized teaching teams to Hebrew and Judaic Studies, improving both focus and quality of instruction. A newly appointed team lead now helps ensure curricular alignment, collaboration, and consistency across grade levels. This year, we proudly partnered with IsraelLink to bring a fresh, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate approach to Israel education in grades three through eight. We’ve also deepened our integration of Judaic values into general studies through our partnership with Facing History and Ourselves, helping students connect timeless Jewish teachings with modern ethical challenges. Professional development has become a cornerstone of this revitalization. By aligning PD requirements for Hebrew and Judaic Studies faculty with those of our general studies team, we’re fostering a shared culture of growth. Thanks to REIMAGINING HEBREW AND JUDAIC STUDIES ACROSS THE SCHOOL: A New Era of Growth and Innovation at Levine
expanded partnerships with leading organizations like the Lookstein Center, JTS, and Nifla’ot, our educators now engage in ongoing training that elevates classroom experiences and deepens their impact. T’filah (prayer) education has also evolved in exciting ways. In collaboration with Jigzi’s digital siddur project, our students have begun recording their own t’filot, blending tradition with technology in powerful, personal ways. As we look ahead, the momentum continues. Middle School curriculum alignment, expanded Hebrew learning support, and a growing Performing Arts program—including music, theater, and our first school play—promise to enrich our students’ educational journeys even further. Our commitment is clear: to nurture a love of Judaism, a strong connection to Israel, and a deep appreciation for Hebrew language and culture. Thanks to these strategic
investments, Levine students are not just learning about Jewish identity—they are living it every day.

As part of their commitment to supporting Israel, our eighth grade students partnered with Agent Ivan, an initiative that provides essential supplies to IDF soldiers on the front lines. Together, the students raised an impressive $2,760.44 to help purchase these supplies. Before departing on their trip to Israel, they received the physical items and packed them in their own bags to personally deliver them. While in Israel, the students met with representatives from Agent Ivan and had the meaningful opportunity to visit an IDF base and connect with soldiers in person. This experience was deeply impactful for a class that had closely followed the events of the war since October 7, 2023. “Agent Ivan gave our students a powerful, hands-on opportunity to support Israel in a real and personal way,” said Rabbi Feivel Rubinstein. “They didn’t just fundraise—they saw exactly where their contributions were going and felt the significance of their efforts firsthand.” 2025 MITZVAH FUND

2025 WALDMAN TEACHER EXCELLENCE AWARD
SMADAR TZUR
Established in 1988 to commemorate the 50th wedding anniversary of William and Sadie Waldman, the Waldman Teacher Excellence Award was created by their children, Andrea and Loren Weinstein, to honor their family’s enduring commitment to Jewish values and education. Each year, this meaningful award recognizes one outstanding educator whose work reflects the spirit and legacy of the Waldmans—and this year, that honor was given to Smadar Tzur, Middle School Hebrew and Judaic Studies teacher. This year, our school celebrates Smadar, an educator whose dedication and vision have shaped the lives of students for 18 years. Known for her unwavering commitment, Smadar makes every moment in the classroom meaningful, always asking how she can help her students grow. Her rapport with students is one of her greatest
strengths—they respect, admire, and feel seen by her, which inspires them to do their best. Colleagues recognize her as a dependable leader who not only supports her team but also drives innovation across the school. This year, Smadar launched a new elective initiative that brought student voices into Friday morning services through video projects and played a key role in guiding the student council to earn the prestigious “Sweepstakes Council” distinction. In Jewish tradition, the number 18 symbolizes Chai—life. Fittingly, in her 18th year, Smadar has breathed new life into her classroom, her department, and our community. She embodies the very best of education: passion, generosity, and an unwavering belief in her students.

RETIREMENT
STEPHANIE BARTA Early Childhood Science Teacher
After nearly a decade of distinguished service to Levine Academy, Stephanie Barta, Early Childhood Science & Discovery teacher, retired at the conclusion of the school year. A master educator, visionary program builder, and beloved member of our faculty, Stephanie leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that has profoundly shaped our community. Stephanie joined Levine Academy following a renowned 34- year tenure at St. Mark’s School of Texas, where she served as Upper School Biology teacher, Stephen M. Seay ‘68 Science Department Chair, Student Council Sponsor, Summer Camp Director, and student advisor. In that time, she raised two sons—both St. Mark’s graduates—and was widely admired for her subject expertise, dynamic teaching, and deep connections with students and colleagues alike. Her arrival at Levine marked a transformational moment for our Early Childhood Center. With warmth, wisdom, and a passion for hands-on discovery, Stephanie established the Early Childhood Science Discovery program—now regarded as a hallmark of our early education experience. Her work has not only enriched our curriculum but has also instilled curiosity, wonder, and a lifelong love of science in generations of young learners. “She brought not only her extraordinary knowledge and experience to our Early Childhood program, but also a boundless energy and a deep love for teaching that inspired students and colleagues alike. Her legacy will live on in the countless children whose curiosity and joy for learning she helped ignite,” said Head of School, Tom Elieff. As Stephanie steps into retirement, we extend our deepest gratitude for her years of outstanding service, visionary leadership, and the joy she brought to every corner of our school. She leaves behind a lasting imprint on Levine Academy, and we wish her continued happiness as she spends more time with her family. Always a teacher, forever part of the Levine community.
Sprouts Grant for Early Childhood Garden Stephanie played a key role in building and enhancing the STEM curriculum for our Early Childhood program. This year, she launched a new garden curriculum, and through her efforts, we were awarded a $10,000 grant from Sprouts to expand and enrich our Early Childhood garden program.

The 2025 Annual Gala was a joyful tribute to our ever-growing alumni community and a powerful reflection of the strength our community’s tradition L’dor V’dor—celebrating the lasting legacy passed from generation to generation. Held on March 2, the evening brought together alumni, current families, grandparents, faculty, and friends for a night filled with warmth, celebration, and school spirit. This year’s gala raised an impressive $622,000 in support of key initiatives including enhanced campus security, tuition assistance, and enrichment programs that benefit students across all grade levels. These funds help ensure our school remains a place where academic excellence, Jewish values, and community connections thrive. Guests enjoyed a vibrant evening featuring a cocktail hour, a seated three-course dinner, a dynamic live auction, and music and dancing to close out the night. We were honored to recognize Daniel Frid ’00, Havy Rosenstock Friedman ’01, Julie Kern Wilkofsky ‘93, and Steven Nosnik ’98 for their outstanding commitment to Levine Academy, and the evening’s festivities were elevated by meaningful moments that highlighted the deep impact of our alumni and parent community. We are incredibly grateful to our Gala Committee, volunteers, sponsors, and donors who made this evening so successful. Your generosity strengthens our school and ensures a bright future for generations to come.
