Her work has sparked important conversations and earned her widespread acclaim in contemporary literature. QUOTE OF THE WEEK DID YOU KNOW? Valentine's Day has evolved over time, with its origins traced back to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which celebrated spring and fertility. As Christianity spread, the festival was outlawed by Pope Gelasius I in the 5th century, and St. Valentine’s Day emerged, possibly to replace it. St. Valentine’s true identity is unclear, with several legends. One story suggests he was a Roman priest who secretly married soldiers, despite Emperor Claudius II’s belief that unmarried men made better soldiers. When his actions were discovered, Valentine was arrested and executed. Another version says he healed a jailer's blind daughter and wrote her a note, signed "From your Valentine," before his execution. The lack of historical records leaves his true story a mystery. The day was originally about honoring him, but by the 14th century, poet Geoffrey Chaucer linked it to romantic love, marking the start of the holiday’s modern association with romance. Valentine's Day traditions, like exchanging cards, grew from the European custom of giving handmade friendship cards in the 17th century. Over time, with advancements in printing, it became a commercial industry. Today, millions of valentines are sold each year. In addition to Valentine's Day, the modern tradition of "Galentine's Day" on February 13, popularized by the TV show “Parks and Recreation,” celebrates friendship. While Valentine's Day is widely celebrated globally, it is no longer an official holiday, and it can be a day of romantic love, friendship, or simply an occasion to show appreciation to loved ones in any form (Milbrand, 2025).
